These Awful Friends Turned Into Enemies

It never ceases to amaze how quickly friends can turn on you in an instant. Sometimes, the red flags were there all along, while in other cases, it comes as a complete surprise to learn that the person you thought was your best friend is actually your worst enemy. These people came together to share their real-life stories of friendships gone wrong, and they're so wild, they're unforgettable.

1. Tripping Up

I had three best friends all throughout school. We did everything together. We all went to different universities after we graduated, but we kept in touch every day. They all graduated university and got jobs back at home, while I stayed on at school to do a Masters. We were still super close, though. We talked about finally going on our first group holiday together.

All suggesting places, one of them suggested a nice resort. But as a student without any real income, I said that would be a bit out of my budget. I suggested a similar resort that was a bit cheaper. Never heard from any of them again. I messaged and called. Nothing. Fifteen years of friendship down the drain, over a holiday. They went on the trip without me. I was utterly heartbroken.

2. Fishy Behavior

I asked my best friend if he could stop in daily to feed my fish and test my water while I was out of town for two weeks. I ran a decent saltwater tank. It was a nice 150 gallon bowfront and gorgeous. I came home to a horrible sight. The tank was completely nuked. That means the fish were all dead and the tank was full of parasites.

Turns out the friend didn't stop by even one time. I gave him $200 to do this, and he said, "Yea, no problem. It's on my way home from work anyways." A lot of folks are usually interested in hearing the aftermath of this situation. When I got home and saw my tank nuked, I went to my friend’s house and confronted him. He basically shrugged the entire thing off.

He claimed that he had just forgotten and acted like I can just start a new tank, like it wasn't a big deal at all. I was in such a rage that I thought it best to just leave or I would hurt him bad. So I went home, had a good cry, and proceeded with cleaning up. I sold off the equipment and gave up for about three years.

I've never spoken to the guy again and have zero intentions of ever doing so.

3. I’ll Have What She’s Having

She wasn't my worst friend to be honest, but this was the crummiest act anyone ever did towards me. I had just started dating a guy in our friend group. We were in all different classes but he was in the same class with her a lot. As soon as we started dating, she became very clingy towards him. She was always hanging onto him, flirting, and just overall acting like she was interested in him.

After two months of us being together, he broke up with me. I was heartbroken. And as soon as he and I weren't together anymore, she stopped acting the way she had been around him. It was suspicious for sure, but I just wanted to think she was still my close friend. Then, I confided in her that I really liked another guy and was ready to move on.

She just so happened to be in a summer play with this guy that I wasn't a part of because I was working all summer. She starts going on and on each time I see her about how much people think she and him are a couple and how she is always flirting with him. It made me realize that the only reason she was doing all this was because she wanted my attention on her, even if it meant stepping on her close friend's feelings.

I stopped confiding in her after that. A few years later, I met and married my husband. She messaged him on Facebook to congratulate us and “interrogate” him, since I was “her dear friend.” She ended up getting flirty quickly and my husband stopped responding. I also have an ex-friend who did similar things, on top of being emotionally manipulative, but it wasn't as obvious other than the "accidental" nude photos she sent to my husband.

4. Poor Career Choices

My best friend and I met as entry-level employees. We both helped each other out and elevated each other over the years. I stayed in corporate in middle management and made good money. He went into business for himself. His company was struggling, so he asked me for a favor: He wanted me to quit my job and help him build his company.

He could only pay for half of what I made at my current job but promised that the business would be a success. When the money started rolling in, we’d split the profits and share the credit. He made it sound like having a best friend as a boss was appealing; "C'mon it’ll be fun!" So, I said yes. Six months later, I landed our first million-dollar client. I asked him when I’d get a split of the profit distribution.

"What profit distribution?" And just like that, he started taking back everything we talked about; "No, no, no, you heard me wrong. I never said half the profits.” Everything would have been fine if we'd had a written agreement. But I didn't think it was necessary. I’d stupidly trusted a person I talked to daily and thought of as my own brother.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice? Nuh uh. When he tried to scam me, I knew our friendship had to end and I also knew that I could no longer be his co-worker. I left his company. When I left, he immediately screwed up his relationship with the rich client I landed. He got ticked and took his business elsewhere, leaving my "best friend" and his company to go bankrupt. Oh, and that wasn't all.

He then got a divorce because his wife, who did the accounting, saw a receipt that didn't make sense. She looked it up and found out that he visited a Russian “cat house.” Three guesses what that was code for. Meanwhile, I went back to a corporate job and always, from that moment on, made sure to get things in writing. Plus, people were impressed that I landed that million-dollar client, so I actually came out on top.

5. Terrible Truths

She did lots of really awful things and manipulated me into apologizing for everything. The breaking point was when she told me, "I know you think you really love (fiancé's name), but really, they should be pre-emptively attacked to get rid of some of that pride. Bring them down a notch." ...What? I was absolutely horrified.

I ended the game night as quickly and calmly as I could and ended the friendship immediately after. She tried to explain why she was right. Then she tried to somehow spin all this as my fault and say that I was unreasonable for saying that she was wrong. At most, she admitted that she had been "tactless" but never admitted that what she said (about maiming my fiancé!) was wrong. After that tense conversation, I stopped getting in touch with her.

Six months later, when she reached out to me, she gave me the worst "apology" of my life. She said she was sorry that I had misunderstood her words. Then she said that she was willing to be the bigger man and offer me her forgiveness. Apparently, she should have anticipated that I wasn't ready to hear hard truths about the love of my life. Yeah... Nope. I don't need that. At all. Still not friends with her.

6. What A Ditch Move

My childhood best friend was always ditching me last minute for any better opportunities that came up—babysitting jobs, sleepovers with more popular girls at school, etc. She literally told me to my face, "We can always make plans another time." Well, excuse me for thinking that she’d actually honor her commitments to me.

Finally, enough was enough. One day, she was absent from school. When I got home, she called me demanding to know why I hadn't already called her to see if she was ok. I explained that I'd had a lot on my mind, since I had broken up with my boyfriend that day, but she didn't care. She had assumed I would be there for her when she wanted me, but she'd kick me to the curb when I wasn't useful to her.

When things were good, she was an amazing friend, and we had so many great times together. I still wonder if ending our friendship was the right thing to do. But she didn't treat me right, and I finally had to leave it. I have never had the same level friendship with anyone else. I invest my loyalty more carefully now.

7. Dinner Was Fine

She was my friend from elementary school. We basically grew up together as babies all through high school and remained in contact through college by hanging out in between semesters. In our mid-twenties, she was attending medical school on the east coast, but I always figured we'd be in the same city when she did her residency.

Meanwhile, I had made a new friend who worked as a nurse in a very well-regarded hospital in Northern California. Here's the thing, though: This hospital was known for only hiring employees through internal references. So, while we were on winter break, I invited New Friend out to dinner with me and my old best friend, so we could all hang out and so that my old BFF could get a foot in the door of this fancy hospital.

My plan could not have gone worse. I introduced them to each other, and my childhood best friend proceeded to spend most of dinner just passive-aggressively insulting New Friend; phrases like "only a nurse" were tossed around. As humiliating as it was for me, I knew New Friend felt even worse. I’m ashamed that I did not defend my New Friend as much as I should have.

Later, as I was preparing to drop childhood best friend off, I overheard her talking to a mutual friend about how rude and inconsiderate I was to invite New Friend when it was "their" time. I ghosted her the next day. I dropped 15 years of friendship without an ounce of remorse. I didn't think I owed her an explanation.

8. Room Service

I live in the Eastern time zone of North America. My “friend” once texted my roommate, who was also the owner of my condo but was living in California at the time where it was 5:00 in the morning PST. In this text message, he claimed that I was high on illicit substances and having rowdy and inappropriate parties every night.

In reality, I was fast asleep when this all went down. Turns out he was the high one texting so early, and did this so that I would get blamed for the damage he himself caused. He was upset at me about something I stood up for and tried to make me homeless as a result. When I realized why he'd done it, my blood ran cold.

REASON: We were at a bar and he was very buzzed and high, sitting at a table. My other friend and I had literally got there just in time to miss a big disagreement between two other friends. The guy in question was pumped up and excited to fill me in, but the way he snapped his fingers and slammed the table to demand me to sit next to him was too much.

I said, “Let me get my first drink first, then I’ll walk over. Please don’t snap your fingers at me and demand that I do things.” Things escalated very quickly after I said that, to the point where he threatened to tip the table over. It was an ugly scene to say the least. And, next thing I knew, he was using this incident as his justification for trying to get me kicked out of our house.

9. Life Wrong Friend

In hindsight, there was a long list of manipulation from him, but here's the thing that really made me snap. He hadn't reached out to me for a year, even after my life was in jeopardy in the hospital. He just didn't seem to really care about my health issues. But then, when he had a crush on a girl I knew, he pops back into my life, begging me to only mention good things about him and even suggesting that I outright lie to this girl.

When she and I were talking at a party, I mentioned some nice things about him, then felt skeezy about it and went on to change the topic. We ended up discussing mental health and my "friend," who had by this time joined our conversation, mentioned how I was a drama queen because I'd almost lost my life at 17 and had been in chronic pain since then.

I basically called him out in front of her and my other friends. I reminded him that when I went on antidepressants when I was 16, I asked him to keep an eye on me as they could make me suicidal. To this, he just responded, "Well, if you are suicidal, just do it." Yeah, that girl did not go out with him and I have not spoken to him for seven years now. No regrets.

10. Up Against The Clock

I had 12 hours before I deployed to Afghanistan. I lived about six hours away from my point of departure, i.e. the airport from which I would fly into theater. My friend, who also happened to be my ex-girlfriend, had committed to driving me there on that day. Packed, dressed, goodbyes said, I take an Uber to her house with all my gear and baggage ready to go.

I knock on the door and she answers in her robe. I ask her if she was about ready to go and she proceeds to tell me that she forgot. This was after we had talked about it just two days prior. She then informed me that she really wasn't feeling like driving that distance. Utterly shocked and confused, I explain to her that if I miss my flight, it's considered a "failure to report for duty" and I could be considered a deserter or AWOL.

Heavy consequences for it either way. She told me to figure it out and closed the door. I was completely in shock. At that point, I had no idea what to do, so I called my first sergeant. We worked in a very remote location and he was the closest person to me at that point. That man drove the three hours from his home to get me and then the other six hours to the airport.

He even bought me dinner and got me tipsy before I had to get on my flight. I had the stunning realization that day that you really can't trust anyone, but I gained a lifelong friend as a result. Thankfully, solely due to that man’s kindness, I was able to make it in time, and I never spoke to the girl again. But me and the sergeant still talk regularly to this day!

11. Living In The Present

My former friend swiped my Christmas and birthday present. I had him and my other friends over a bunch because my family went on vacation without me. I was only about 16 or 17 years old at the time and I was home alone, so I wanted some company. I woke up one morning to grab my gift card that was my big present for the year and found out it was gone.

Every single one of my guests I had known since I was in elementary school and I treated them all like they were my brothers. I called up the Best Buy store to see if someone had used the gift card and found out that it had indeed been used already to buy a car stereo head unit. I got the specific model. Then, I called up my one friend's girlfriend and asked her if he had bought anything at Best Buy lately.

She said he had. I asked if he had used a gift card. She said he had. I asked if he had bought a head unit of that specific model. She said he had. I was furious—but I got my revenge. Me and my other friends then got in our cars and drove over to his house. We looked into his vehicle and saw the brand new headset installed in his car. Theoretically, in a totally didn't happen scenario, "we then proceeded to break off all his mirrors and windows, and slashed his tires."

The guy didn't understand why I didn't want to talk to him ever again. Who the heck takes someone else’s birthday and Christmas presents? The gosh darn Grinch, that's who. Apparently, he had been sleeping at my house weekly for years. I mostly hate my birthday and Christmas now because of that, and also because I was deployed on my 21st birthday as well as that year's Christmas in which both my grandpas came down with cancer and one passed while I was away.

Kinda soured things for me.

12. Time To Pack Up

We were best friends throughout most of elementary and all of high school. We went to different high schools but would still hang out regularly. Then, in our teens, he started to "forget" to invite me to things. Slowly, the "cool" metalheads from the local scene were his only company. But after high school, I thought we patched things up. We planned to go to the same city for college, and we agreed to share a place. I took it upon myself to search for one. After everything was agreed with the landlord, my "friend" didn't answer his phone for two days.

That's when I found out the truth. He had applied to a university in another city on the opposite side of the country without telling me a thing. I was furious and lost good opportunities for living space. I still didn't want to hold a grudge but was waiting for him to be a man and make amends. I never got an apology. He didn’t call at all.

Then some 15 months later, he called me…asking for money. He knocked up some girl, married her, and then divorced her. All in the span of two months. I told him that he wasn't my friend and I wasn't going to help him. But it didn't end there. His father disowned him quickly, and he had nowhere to go, so eventually I took pity on him and let him live at my parent’s place.

They had what you could call a mini-house, which was an extension of the house. But when my parents suggested he pay super low rent (mostly to just cover the utilities), he refused. After that, I had to kick him out of my life again. But even still, we weren't through yet. A few years later, he got in a work injury but had no insurance, so he asked me to help him one last time. I relented, and I regret that decision to this day.

He still had several screws in his arm, couldn't work, and was semi-disabled. I felt bad for him, so I gave him a room in my apartment. I was already working then so I could afford it for the time being. We agreed that he would pay the rent when he was able to get some cash. Everything seemed fine between us for about two weeks.

It finally happened when I was working a sudden night shift at 9 in the morning. I got back home to find the doors unlocked, vomit and broken glass on the floor of the kitchen, the entire bathroom covered in pee, my room trashed, multiple items broken, and a girl in my bed. My "friend" and another girl were on the couch. That was the last straw.

I didn't let them just grab their things and leave, though. I made them stay and clean everything until it was spotless.

13. Falling For Him

This guy I knew pushed me into the ground for no reason mid-sentence. He did this despite knowing that I was still injured from a car accident, which he knew I was hospitalized for. He then immediately turned his back and walked away without a word. I was too shocked to say anything. The next thing I knew, he was gone. I wasn’t saying anything bad or mean to him either. It was something casual akin to the weather.

After that, I had to slowly and carefully get up from my crouching position by myself and sit down on a nearby fence to gather myself. When I later confronted him about it, he got super defensive and started saying it was just a light shove and a prank. Super not okay. I had to strain my back muscles really uncomfortably just so I wouldn’t hit the ground, and I don’t think anyone should have to live in constant fear that their “friend” might at any minute risk paralyzing them for life just to get a cheap laugh.

This same guy also kept parroting something my abuser had said, which I told the group about in confidence. He thought that doing this was hilarious. I told him to stop but he said he wouldn’t. He accused me of being too “PC.” As if my own personal story is something to be politically correct about?? I trust some people a lot less now because of this experience...

No one seemed to care or stand up for me or anything, and I felt utterly alone. Needless to say, I do not talk to this guy anymore...

14. Getting Old

My best friend of three years got swiftly kicked to the curb when she decided to use me as a sounding board. Her "predicament" was that she didn't know if she should invite me or someone else to her house for her socially-distanced barbecue. When I called her out on it, she chose to gaslight me instead of just saying sorry.

Her exact words were, "I am just so gutted that you took what I said the wrong way when I didn't say anything wrong." I was shocked at the time, but looking back, I should have seen it coming. This lady had a lot of issues, mainly to do with drinking. She’d drop her friends in an instant if she had a chance of sleeping with someone. She’d use her friends to do everything when they were her invited guests.

By the way, this woman is 54 years old, even though she acts like a 19-year-old. I'm just so "gutted" that I put up with her nonsense for so long.

15. Let’s Get Away From It All

When I was in Grade 8, I went to the Dominican Republic with my friend and her family. The entire time we were there, she didn't want to do anything at the resort. Like, nothing at all. She wanted to sit around with her parents and watch them play games. This was despite the fact that her parents and their friends were pushing us to go off and do some fun kid activities and other things.

You know, normal vacation activities such as swimming and taking in the sights. I was miserable. I couldn't go anywhere without her and missed out on everything because she was just being a jerk and mean. It was clear she didn't want to be on the trip at all, probably because they vacationed so frequently, and they only invited me to entertain her.

She was never like this at school. I was still happy to be there. My family was poor and this was my first ever vacation. I was thankful that my mom and dad were able to get enough money together so I could go. So I didn't complain. When we returned and went to school the following Monday, she told all of our group of friends that I made fun of her mom on our trip for having breast cancer.

WHAT?! I didn't know she had breast cancer, and no I definitely didn't make fun of her. I'm not a lunatic. Her mom, who we found out was perfectly healthy when I told my mom about this and she called, did not have breast cancer. Anyways, everyone at school hated me after that. I had no friends until I went off to high school.

16. Time To Be

My best friend of ten years guilt-tripped me because I didn’t have much time for her. Apparently, something bad had happened to her, and she needed us. I suggested we just talk online or over the phone or to come around to my place since I didn’t have a car or a drivers license, and it took me two hours each way to get to her.

She declined and kept guilt tripping me because apparently, I’m a “bad” friend for not driving four hours when I have to get up at 4:30 AM for my apprenticeship and have exams. She told all of our other friends what was going on with her except me but continued to make me out as the bad friend when I tried to be there in all the ways that I possibly could.

But because I didn't drop everything and do exactly what she wanted me to do, she started excluding me from everything. After I found out she only left me out, I wrote her a long message on how disappointed I was and that that was not how a friend should behave. She blocked me, and that was just fine with me. But here's the kicker: she was mad that I wasn't there for her. The whole time this was going down, I was going through my own issues too. She just never even thought to ask.

17. Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss

I had a very close friend in high school. She moved to Alabama for university after we graduated, but we remained very close. Then, when she came back, we didn't talk much. But I still considered her a close friend. We went out for coffee about two years ago. She kept asking me about my life and my goals, and I said I was happy with where I was.

I coach gymnastics and my boyfriend and I will eventually take over his family farm, and start our own family. She texted me two days later and said, "Hey, so my entrepreneur friend is hosting a workshop. Do you want me to sign you up?" I said no, but thanked her for the offer. She then texted me saying: "So clearly we are at two different points in our lives. You have no goals or ambitions, and I don't want that kind of negativity in my life. I wish you the best."

And I never spoke to her again after that.

18. Needy A Lesson

I "broke up" with my first friend from kindergarten in high school. She accepted a scholarship meant for impoverished kids, even though her grandparents were multimillionaires, and she was on her third new car at 18. Because she got the scholarship, a friend of ours (who had also applied and is actually from a disadvantaged background) ended up not being able to afford college.

Her mom was a stay-at-home mom with an amazing wardrobe, and her dad managed about twenty apartment complexes that the family-owned. They had a beach house in Connecticut and Florida and a yacht for each. They had lobster dinners every weekend in the summer for a family of 15 plus friends. Her parents would hide money.

They kept everything in the grandparents' name. On paper, it looked like their dad was a maintenance person hired at the apartment making $20k a year. When she graduated, her grandparents signed over the Connecticut beach house to her. It sold for $1.3 million. I asked her why she took the money and why she even applied.

She said her parents were smarter than his, so she deserved it. I just couldn't be friends with her anymore. She barely works now, lives off the family money, and he's finishing his associates this year, having worked multiple jobs to put himself through school and helping to raise his siblings. It still makes me sick.

19. Living A Double Life

It turns out that my friend lied. About every single thing. We were friends for over a year, but it felt like we'd known each other forever. He would always make it a point to let me know that I was someone he trusted, and that I was the “only” person he had. He would tell me that “everyone leaves” him, that “he always hurts people,” etc. My response to this was to make sure that I would never leave his texts unanswered and promise to be there for him no matter what.

Then, one day, out of the blue, he tells me that our friendship is over. I remember feeling like my heart was shattered. I cried for weeks, trying to figure out what I had done wrong. Our mutual friends assured me that he had a very good reason for doing this, and that he'd be back to being my friend sometime soon. So I began waiting, constantly worried about him.

He told all our mutual friends what was wrong, except me, and instructed them not to let me know. Finally, my best friend calls me one day and tells me that he's lied to every single person he knows, and that nothing we thought we knew about him was true at all. Turns out, he told everyone that he'd been diagnosed with cancer and had to take time away from everyone.

During our friendship, he opened up to me about his extremely abusive household, and most of our friendship was me letting him know that he deserved better and that I'd do anything to help him out of there. None of what he said was true. The truth came out because one of my friends caved and called his sister to find out how he was doing.

She was confused, because he was absolutely healthy. And when asked about their parents' separation, she confirmed that their parents were indeed together, and had never been at risk of divorce.

20. Out The Woodwork

I opted to sell my truck and get a bike. My ex-best friend and I had been friends for years. She lived about two hours away from me. But at that point, our relationship was spent over the phone mostly, so I figured I'd take a bus to see her a few weekends a year like I had always done before, and she could also see me.

Well, she stopped taking my calls, but I figured she was pretty busy and that she'd get around to me. But she didn't. Then one day, I saw something that made my stomach drop.  She'd posted pictures of a big camping trip with all of our friends. No one had even told me. It was that that made me realize that after 15 years, our friendship was not doing well.

Those few years before I sold my truck, our friendship depended on me being able to go visit her town whenever I wanted. Making plans so that I took a bus was too big of a commitment for her, which shouldn't have surprised me based on, well, her. But it did surprise me because I never thought she'd be that way with me.

21. Three For The Price Of One

The moment I realized my friend wasn’t a real friend was going over to their house to hang out and finding around ten of my missing Xbox games in a loose stack of discs in his living room. On another occasion, I arrived late to a friend's birthday party a few years ago, and the birthday boy introduced me as "the guy I was telling you all about. Cool dude, but I wouldn't trust him with my wallet!"

He was intoxicated and it wasn't a joke. I also had a girlfriend break up with me. When she told me why, my blood ran cold. Apparently, my roommate would send her private pics of himself, call her on weekends, dial her up all the time, and do many other inappropriate things to try to get her to sleep with him. These are the ones that come to mind right now. I definitely am no longer friends with any of those individuals.

The first story occurred when I was only about twelve years old. I definitely took the games all back, but I remember that some of them were so scratched they were unplayable. The second story was a few years ago, but it honestly still bothers me. I don't take things that don’t belong with me, so I have no idea what he was referring to. Rest assured, your wallets are safe with me.

As for the last story, she told me that stuff only after we broke up because she wanted to hurt my feelings. My roomie was a substance-using crazy loon. To be honest, all the behavior that she described seemed like something he could do for sure. But by that time, he was already my ex-roomie. So making him an ex-friend too was not that big a deal.

22. Rejection After Rejection

He had feelings for me, and neither of us were out or had ever dated. I loved him a lot like a sibling and turned him down, but we were attached at the hip too and continued spending time together like before. He was my only close friend of 8 years. We came out to each other a few weeks apart, and neither had any idea.

I always asked what he needed from me, and he agreed multiple times that it was fine. I didn’t really want to be alone, so I followed along. A few weeks later, suddenly every acquaintance, even the teachers, were commenting on how I was using him and not being considerate of his feelings. I had not come out to anybody.

So, he outed me, threw me under the bus, and after barely being able to cope with the torment I'd already suffered in high school, I lost what little I had that made me feel safe or welcome at school. I chose to remain silent. Apparently, that was me admitting guilt, so I gave everyone the silent treatment for the last few weeks of school.

I graduated top in our class, refused a speech and threatened to swear in the middle of the stadium with 3,000+ people if they made me, was the first to walk and receive my diploma, and then immediately left the ceremony from the stage without looking back.

23. When I Was Seventeen

It was my seventeenth birthday. I had invited two of my "best friends" over to stay the night. I waited for hours and finally got a text from one of them, saying they had gotten in trouble and couldn't stay the night. For some context, they were twins. About an hour later, they were tagged in pictures on social media. They were at another girl's house.

I confronted them the next day and they stuck with their lie and said their mom wouldn't drive them because they were in terrible trouble. They claimed that this was why they walked to the other girl’s house instead. My mom asked their mom in the end, because she knew how hurt I was. Turns out their mom didn't even know about my birthday, and they had never been in trouble. It was devastating.

I stopped hanging out with them after that.  I learned a few months later that one of them had decided she didn't like me because her twenty-year-old crush, i.e. another friend's brother, had said he thought it was a shame that I was a minor because he thought I was cute. The twenty-year-old didn't know I was 17 at first. They have another sister who was born about a year after him.

He thought I was the 19-year-old’s friend and asked if I was single. My friend told him I was 17. He never once came off as creepy. He was always very nice and respectful. Never hit on me or made me feel uncomfortable. But he still inadvertently cost me my friendship with both twins. It still bugs me when I think about it from time to time.

24. Second Coming

We were friends since we were babies. Our moms worked at the same place. My mom saw him as her own child and he was frequently at our house after school, because his mom was kind of absent. His family moved out of the state, but we kinda kept in touch. Then, he came back while we were in our twenties. My mom was going to start remodeling the house.

He insisted on helping us since he was working with a construction company. To make a long story short, he said he needed some money for the construction permits. In hindsight, it wasn't even that much. But he took the money and we never saw him again. He even blocked me on Facebook. We later found out that the permit cost was a fraction of the amount he took.

The biggest pain in the heart was watching my mom crying, disappointed that her "own son" would do that to her. So screw him. We still aren’t fully sure what his motivation could have been. Some have proposed addiction as a possible explanation. I'll tell you that for a while we remained cautious about that as a possibility, until we found out that he had just left his job suddenly.

Also, many years later, his sweet old lady of a grandma was thrown behind bars because she and another woman had defrauded hundreds of their colleagues out of money. So we just realized that it was maybe just in the family’s genes. You can be sure as heck that I don’t consider that guy a friend anymore! He was by far the worst friend I’ve ever had.

25. Choosing Sides

Some friends had done some horrible stuff to me over the years. We're all capable of that. But the worst I would have to say was with this one girl. I really did enjoy being friends with her and I cared about her a lot. As soon as we became friends, we clicked instantly and we just had the most amazing conversations. We also had a similar understanding of life that you don't find in many other people.

Anyway, her boyfriend's brother took physical advantage of me in an inappropriate way. And I didn't really tell anyone about it. But my boyfriend at the time found out and reached out to people trying to find out information. So this girl's boyfriend, the brother of the guy who did it, made my friend disown me as a friend. She just dropped me once the truth came out.

She acted like we didn't just spend the last year together attached at the hip. She blocked me on all social media accounts. She pretended like we were never friends. Then, she and her boyfriend had a falling out and all of a sudden she resurfaced saying she was done with him and that she was sorry. But I guess that didn't last longer than a week, because once they got back together she dropped and blocked me again.

It hurt me a lot. It still hurts when I think about it. It's really messed up to do things like that to people. It’s been enough time now that I’m okay. But it was definitely a learning experience for me about the dark side of human nature. Thankfully, it didn't break me.

26. Birthday Surprise

This story happened a long time ago. At my tenth birthday party, to be precise. It was the first time I'd actually tried to have a big group get-together. It was around thirty kids at a park with a T-ball set up, along with normal picnic stuff and the like. My best friend at the time said he had a surprise for me in one of the fenced walkways leading to the park.

I follow him around the corner, where he sucker-punched me with his other friend. They then took turns jumping on me and kicking me. After a few minutes, another kid from the party saw, ran them off, and took me back to my mom away from the other kids so I didn't have to be too embarrassed. It was a horrible experience to have gone through as a kid.

Thankfully, whenever I tell this story, I receive an outpouring of kindness and support. It was so long ago but still brings back uncomfortable memories of being a shy poor kid with a weird last name in a very rich area, honestly. In case anyone was wondering, this happened in the 1980s, so it wasn’t like it was all the way back in a time when this kind of physical violence was common among kids.

For some additional context, my “friend” was the kind of guy to spray paint caterpillars to watch them slowly lose consciousness. He’d also shoot pellets at stray cats, or hide rocks inside snowballs and then laugh at someone getting hurt when he threw them. No, he didn't get in trouble for what he did because no one else saw what happened and I never said who it was, even if my mom secretly knew.

His mom tried almost everything to make him behave, but he was just that bad. The upside is that he regretted doing that to me for years afterward. And when he finally apologized to me, he was a totally different person and has been ever since. Still a little atypical, but not malicious at all. He told me that the reason why he hit me was because the other kid wanted to be his new best friend and he was angry at me for criticizing him about how cruel he could be.

I had, however timidly, told him about this concern of mine not long before. The other kid, "Steve," hated me for being poor and Jewish, basically, and pushed my friend to hate me too. It being my birthday didn't matter, because I really wasn't friends with anyone. I was really just trying to make some for the first time, which might have set Steve off, come to think of it.

There were also loads of families in the area, so it was really a case of throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. The boy who stepped in to help and I didn't really know each other. He was the guy everyone else was afraid of because he got big at a very young age. He went to boarding school the next year and it was somehow really good for him. Heck of a man last I knew.

Anyway, it’s been ages since the incident and I don’t hold a grudge. I just appreciate the kindness that others have shown me in all the years since. I was fortunate enough that this became a last straw type moment in terms of what I'd put up with. I know that doesn't happen for everybody who has to deal with being bullied quite so hard, but it really helped motivate me to stand up for myself down the road.

If anyone read this and faced something similar, I'm sorry to you. You deserve better in a friend and I hope you can find it, just like I later did.

27. Room Service

My first roommate was one of my best friends from high school, though out of everyone in the friend group we had we weren't the closest, I guess. Nevertheless, we were still very good friends. Aside from being a poor communicator who would sometimes leave her phone at home and then disappear with her boyfriend and scare everyone, she was actually a great roommate considering how a couple of messy, working 19-year-old girls can be.

She went through a rough patch at work where she was basically working 60+ hour work weeks and in escalated customer service issues for a store credit card. She was miserable. When she got a week off after working, she wanted to throw a party in our house and promised to host, clean, and handle it all. I was 19, not being expected to do anything, and I wanted to go to a party.

So I said heck yeah! Everything with the party was a blast until towards the end, when people started asking me for things. I was intoxicated, so I said, "Why the heck are you askin' me?! Ask my friend!!" That was when I found out that my friend had been getting hot and heavy with her boyfriend, but had let two of our intoxicated mutual friends sleep in her bed already.

So the two lovebirds directed partygoers to me for anything they needed and left to go to my friend's boyfriend's place for the night, during her party. This was all done without even informing me. She left her phone, of course, and he didn't answer his. The following night, when she didn't come back, I cleaned up with a few members of our friend group, who also couldn't believe she had done this. I was beyond furious.

She wasn't intoxicated or anything, and she had specifically encouraged me to drink and have fun all night, saying she wanted to enjoy the hosting experience. She said seeing us all have fun would relax her more than drinking would. And then she bailed and left me with a ton of bugs drawing food and dirty dishes in the sink, along with the mess you'd expect from thirty young drinking idiots.

It took five hours for five people to clean up! And we were actually good cleaners! She didn't come back for three days. Except for once, two days after the party, when I was at work, to get some of her things. I know because I had missed a stack of pizza boxes she had put in the oven, so they started a small fire and my dad went to check on things for me.

The day after I finally managed to confront her about it, which was maybe five days after the party itself, she was so "upset" that she packed everything and moved out. Just like that. She ended up cutting all of our friends off, and we realized she had some other things going on in the background that were extra shady. But yeah. Whew.

28. Happy Birthday

I had been seeing a girl for several months. It was an unofficial sort of thing, yet we introduced each other as boyfriend and girlfriend and all that. I had my birthday come around and had some friends over for drinks. One of those friends was Aaron. He was the last guy from our school friends’ group that I was still friends with. Pretty sure that was my 22nd birthday, so we’d been friends for a while.

My girlfriend was drinking a fair bit and decided that I wasn’t giving her enough attention, so she started flirting with him a bit. I didn’t really mind, since I knew she was intoxicated and I figured it wouldn’t go anywhere since I trusted him. Oh, how wrong I was. My girlfriend was absolutely plastered by the time things wound down and everyone started going home.

Aaron was intoxicated and was going to be sleeping on the couch. The two of them ended up on the couch making out and who knows what else. She started throwing up not long after and that sobered herself up enough to realize what she was doing. The next morning, my friend acted like we were still friends and I was just quietly waiting for it to be long enough that he could drive home.

I blocked him on everything the moment he left and had a talk with my girlfriend. I ended up forgiving her due to how out of her senses she was and how sorry she was. I found out a few days later that at least two of my other friends had been telling Aaron that he needed to stop because she was my girlfriend, and he had just made a bunch of excuses and ignored them.

Looking back, it wasn’t really a surprise. He’d started dating my previous ex a month after she broke up with me, then cheated on her with one of his little brother’s intoxicated friends and got dumped. This was almost ten years ago now. We broke up a month or so later when she and her family moved to another state.

29. Pineapple Express

A friend was moving internationally and he offered me a fridge and washing machine for about half price. I was in university, but desperately needed it. I told him I had like $20 per week to work with and he was cool with it. We agreed to a price of $15 per week for the next year. Then, six weeks later, his girlfriend comes around to tell me he wants to take me to court to get the rest of the money in one payment.

I get served, go to court, and present the original agreement. His girlfriend says he needs the money urgently and the judge says that doesn't mean squat. He then calls my dad and says I took stuff that belonged to him. My dad calls me up and I lay it all out. Dad ends up paying him the remainder just to get him to go away.

Screw you with a pineapple, Toby!

30. History Repeats Itself

I gave my friend a birthday present and she just said she didn’t like it. I later found it in the trash when I visited her. She would always be late to everything. She got tickets to an Incubus concert and a meet and greet. It wasn’t in our city, so I saved all of my money to be able to afford the trip. A week before, she texted me saying she was going to Disneyland, so she sold the tickets.

I once painted a whole big beautiful mural in her room. Two months later, she just painted over it with purple because she got bored. She once invited me for coffee and I got really excited because I hadn’t seen her for a while and had a lot going on. I was almost homeless at the time, so I took the little money I had to pay for my coffee.

I got there only to discover that what she had invited me to was not a private get together at all. It was a multilevel marketing presentation that she was trying to sell me on. There were like six other people there, who all appeared to be just as disappointed as me. Then, she did it again the next time we made plans. I don’t know why I thought it would be different. That was the last time I saw her.

31. Dirty Double

I had two guy best friends, and I’d never thought anything about it despite being a woman. But apparently, they did. We all went off to the same college, and I had made new friends. I decided to bring some along to a big night out with my two best friends as well. I was not drinking that night, and I had to drive home.

After the night was over, I said bye and left. Next morning, I got tons of texts that broke my heart. My true friends explained that my “best friends” had started to trash talk me the second I left. They made up lies, called me things, and told them that I slept with both of them whenever they wanted. It was so bad, my newly made friends distanced from me.

32. A Change Of Heart

After 25 years of friendship, I announced to my best friend that I was moving to the city she was in. I had a great job opportunity and felt like it was an awesome time to make a big life change. I was so excited to tell her, I could hardly wait. She flatly replied with, “Cool.” And when I asked her what parts of town I should look at to live in, she stated, “I can’t help you, you should just figure it out when you get here.”

We never had a fight, had been close for our entire adult lives, and I had continually helped her in all aspects of her life without hesitation. To this day, I cannot tell you why she started treating me this way. Long story short, we live in the same city now and haven’t seen each other in six years. And I’m quite sure we live just minutes away from each other.

I will probably never know what happened.

33. Customer’s Always Right

My best friend was promoted to manager at work. They were exceptionally hard on me because they didn't want to show favoritism but went so far in the opposite direction that it wasn't okay. I had a man physically push the customer I was serving out of the way and threaten me, a 21-year-old woman, when I said he couldn't get ahead of the line.

He went, "If you don't let me go first, I'm going to wait for you after work, and I'm going to hurt you." I was terrified and I told him he needed to leave right away or else I would call security. Guess how my manager/best friend responded to this scary situation? She gave me a written warning for "threatening a customer" and comped the dude his entire order.

After that, I knew that we were no longer friends.

34. Starting The Drama

I had one friend that bought a bunch of tickets for a midnight movie premiere for myself and our entire friend group, about 15 of us in total. On the day of the show, he texts me and says he forgot to buy a ticket for me. I ask, "What do you mean you forgot to buy ‘my’ ticket? Of the 15 you bought, how is it my ticket that you decided wasn't purchased?"

Turns out, he did buy a ticket for me included in the 15 he bought, but he had just met a girl the week prior and decided to give my ticket to her. So our entire friend group went to the movie, minus me. There's other things he did to me as well. We're no longer friends. And for anyone wondering what movie it was, it was Jurassic World.

35. A Real Big Deal

I was going through severe depression. I just couldn't muster the energy to even shower. She was asking to hang out, and I told her that I wasn't feeling well and my depression was consuming me. And she said, "Well, we all go through things in life. If you were a real friend, you'd take the time to make sure I was ok."

So, I got really worried that something bad happened to her. I immediately apologized and asked her what was wrong. I'll never forget her words. She said that she was going through a really hard time too. She was busy cheating on her boyfriend with a new guy, and this new dude wasn’t being attentive enough. I was stunned.

After that phone call, I stopped being her friend. Literal depression was better company than that girl.

36. Truck Stop

During my freshman year in college, I had two roommates and one of their girlfriends came to visit for the weekend. So the other roommate and I were gonna give them the room to themselves for a little while. Most nights, this wouldn't be a big deal, but this was in the middle of a blizzard and we had almost two feet of snow, so there wasn't really anywhere to go.

So my roommate and a few buddies were gonna take a friend's truck out for a ride through the snowy hills we lived in. As we were walking out to the truck, I realized I had forgotten something and ran back upstairs to grab it real quick. When I came back down, I saw the truck driving away without me. Turns out one of our other friends had their girlfriend in town too, and he had brought her along, so there wasn't room in the car for me anymore.

So they just left without me, without waiting or even trying to tell me…

37. Just Can’t Be

I'm a guy and my best friend was a girl. For ages, people thought we were more than friends, but it was never like that. Eventually, I got married and we still hung out. My wife was always cool with it because we were friends since childhood, and she understood that we were more like cousins. Then my best friend got married.

Her husband was not cool with her hanging out with a dude. He would be friendly to my face, but I doubt that’s how it was when they were alone. One day, she stopped responding to my memes, texts, and phone calls. We haven’t spoken for the last five years. I miss her.

38. Taking Turns

My ex got with two of my friends after a pretty bad breakup. It was to the point where it just seemed like she was trying to hurt me, and my so-called friends were willing to do the same just to get some easy action. So I was in the car with a third friend on Thanksgiving eve, telling him how much this was affecting me, to which he replied: "That's so disrespectful, man. I'd never do that to you!"

Well, that Christmas, the very next month, another friend shows me a picture of that friend and my ex together on Instagram. They started dating shortly after that.

39. Gross Retraction

She ghosted me when I needed her most and then just didn't bother to contact me for anything ever again. But then, years later, I suddenly got an invitation to her baby shower for a kid I didn't even know existed. Apparently, I was still ranked on the list of "let's ask this person for gifts." The girl who put together the shower was mortified.

When she asked why I had RSVP'D no, I told her that no one had even told me about my old friend's pregnancy. This poor girl was so embarrassed because she figured I had been one of the first to know. Nope. If she ever wants to make it right, she has my number, but I'm not going to waste any energy hunting her down. It really hurt to be left all alone for all those years.

40. A Tale Of Two Cities

I drove a twelve-hour journey twice in the span of a year to visit this jerk because I thought we were friends and he acted like we were. It cost me $300 each time to visit him, but he was alone in his new city and kept messaging me saying I should come visit and blah blah blah. It was his first job after graduating from college, so I was happy to visit and help with the adjustment.

Later, I find out that this guy has come back to my town multiple times and didn’t even hit me up once. And he stayed for months at a time! When I confront him about this, he says he’ll visit me next time he’s back in town. So the next time comes around and he stops by literally right before he’s about to drive home. He knocks on my door to say hi for five minutes.

Like dude, if you don’t wanna see me, why are you just going through all this nonsense and making me waste my money?

41. Getting Around To It

I stopped caring. He had no ambition and purposely got kicked out of the Marines because it wasn't like high school. He squandered any talent he had only to work just above minimum wage jobs when I offered to help him get into a skilled trade. All he had to do was come to the hall, and I’d help him learn to weld. He came one day and somehow burned a hole in my welding hood.

But the real finale was realizing that he never called to hang out. I always had to call and make the arrangements. I ghosted him after he couldn't be bothered to tell me he couldn't make it to my place six times in a row. He hasn't called back. It’s been two years.

42. Designated Driver

My friend called me up and invited me over to play a game with them and their other friends. At the time, I had only barely started driving, but I decided, yeah, that sounds like fun. So I went over to play. When I arrived, I found out that they had volunteered me to pick up the other friends. I was not prepared to do this, but she trapped me because I had already agreed to come play "with her friends."

I was pretty annoyed by this, but I went ahead and drove to three places picking everyone up. No one was really ready to go when I arrived and one of them also needed me to drop them back on campus along the way so they could drop off their school assignment. By the time all was said and done, it was really late and I needed to get back home because I had to get up in the morning to go to work.

Not one of them even said thank you. The friendship didn't really last much longer after that.

43. Slipping Further Away

We used to hang out all the time, and he even stayed at my parent’s house while he was unemployed. We’d be stoned sometimes back then, but he got more and more into substance misuse and started hanging out with his dealers a lot only to try and become one himself. So, he stopped caring about the people who were in his life.

He stopped showing up to work. I tried to talk to him and get him to realise what he was doing, but he was set on becoming a dealer. His parents bought him an apartment and a car to make it easier for him to get to and from work under the condition that he started looking for a normal job. Surprise, surprise, that never happened.

I tried to reconnect with him a few times, and we hung out, but it was clear that he was lost. He lost so much weight and looked really scrappy. He’d changed the way he dressed too to look more "gangster." I gave up on him and cut ties. I still think about him and wish him the best though. It was sad to see him change.

44. Twenty Going On Zero

My former friend ghosted me after more than two decades years of friendship. He was my best friend for as long as I can remember, but at some point, he just stopped saying yes when I suggested getting together to do stuff. We could have a conversation about anything, but the second I brought up doing something it was radio silence.

He finally agreed to something one time. I thought that meant things would get better. I was so, so wrong. He blew me off like an hour beforehand. No rain check or suggestion that we try again. I was depressed for days, but that was the day I gave up. He was the best man at my wedding. I loved him like a brother and still hope he's doing well and happy.

But the rejection hurts so much that I just don't try anymore. I've mourned the loss of our relationship and am done with it. And I still don't know why.

45. And You’re Out

My best friend in college was bipolar. I already knew this about her, and it did not seem to affect our relationship. At first. Then for no reason whatsoever, she decided to tell everyone I was a lesbian. I wasn't offended based on that; I was offended because I was still a virgin. She knew I was really self-conscious about it.

I was the only one of our friends who was still a virgin. She said the reason I hadn't had a boyfriend was that I was secretly into women. I basically ghosted her. I could not deal with her crazy anymore. She checked herself into a mental hospital. Her roommate told me it was my fault. I ended that relationship too.

46. Untying The Knot

I offered to pay everything and even pay her for her time off work for my best friend to come to my wedding. But she didn’t. It was a really small backyard wedding and I didn’t have any bridesmaids, nor did I want anyone to spend money getting dresses and all that jazz. I just wanted her to come and be there for the moment.

The excuse she gave was work, and so I understood. But then later, I found out that she had lied and had planned a trip with her other friends. I still don’t know why she didn’t want to come. We were friends for over ten years and, although this wasn’t the first time she had really hurt me, it was definitely the last. I never spoke to her again.

47. Not Under My Roof

He just had no drive to go anywhere in life. I had tried to get him a job in manufacturing, but he’s fine with living at home with his mom working jobs that went nowhere. He also showed up at my house for my daughter’s first birthday party after not seeing him for months carrying a bottle and keeping a smoke behind his ear.

That was the last straw for me; you don’t show up like that disrespecting my house, my child, my fiancé, as well as my family who had come in from out of state. Read a room. You don’t bring a bottle to a 1-year-old’s birthday party.

48. Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner

For my sixteenth birthday, I invited my friends over for a party including dinner. I spent all day cooking with my dad and we made beautiful chocolate mousse cups in chocolate bowls. I went all out and I was so proud of the meal. I told everyone that dinner was at 6:30. Nobody showed up until 8:30. They were completely intoxicated.

They had brought me a bag of toys from Dollar Tree as a present. I had already cleaned up and put away all the food. They had all been hanging out without me on my birthday and I was still just an afterthought.

49. Being The Bigger Man

We’re both larger gay guys, but I had a better dating pool despite being more reserved and heavier than he was. He started to treat me like he was doing me, the ugly friend, a favor when we went out on the town together. After I ended the friendship, he tried to reconnect with me, but the whole thing was so tense and awkward.

A few months later, he got back in touch again and this time, he was in rough shape. It was sad because he’d obviously lost his sobriety and wanted to blame it on “how I treated him.” It taught me a lot about how to deal with manipulative people, and I’m better off for it.

50. Government Gridlock

My friend lied about me at our government job to the point where I was investigated by the Attorney General and ultimately had to leave a job and a boss that I loved. She quit when we found out it was her who lied, as she knew my boss would can her sorry behind. Oh, and I was the one who got her hired in the first place. Also, I can’t forget the best part of all.

I was one week postpartum on maternity leave when she decided it was the appropriate time to do all this. Talk about some people. It was rough.

51. Request Denied

She had a massive crush on a very nice guy who’d tried to let her down gently as best as he could. I don’t remember the details, but I started taking his side because she was becoming overly obsessed with him, despite me trying to convince her to move on because unfortunately, he just wasn’t interested. She didn’t talk to me for a month.

The nail in the coffin was the month that I started dating my wife, and she did not get along with her at all. She constantly played the victim in whatever negative interaction she had, and it just wore me out to the point where I intentionally started letting go.

52. He Said, She Said

The story that comes to mind for me is the horrible first impression my at the time 'best friend' had on my then-new girlfriend, who is now my wife all these years later. We all went out to dinner. My wife is shy and quiet, while my friends are loud and rowdy. My friend’s cousin kept messing with her and being obnoxious, despite her very clearly asking him to stop.

At one point, he made inappropriate comments on her breasts, and it got to the point where she ended up crying and walking out of the restaurant. I followed her out. Then, my "friend," who had been in the bathroom at the time, called me to ask what happened. I told him his cousin was being a jerk, and his response was that my girlfriend was probably doing something to provoke him.

He claimed that they had been trying to lighten the mood and get her to talk more, but she was just "giving them the cold shoulder." He then informed me that she wasn't welcome at their outings anymore. He went on to apologize later on, but was also having serious problems with drinking and we drifted our separate ways before long.

53. Zero For Friendship

In the space of a few months, I lost my mother, watched my first marriage implode, moved three thousand miles away from everything I knew, and had a miscarriage in a teeny town motel bathroom. After all this, and after 25 years of supposed friendship, she said that my life choices were stressing her out and she stopped talking to me.

The whole time I had never complained or asked advice or for support because I’m an overly self-contained weirdo. She reached out about two years later via email, and although that was eight years ago, I'm still too angry to respond.

54. There’s No Place Like Home

My friend is trying to gaslight me because I'm thinking of selling the place I'm letting them stay at and not using the money to buy them a new place to live. Also, they're pretty messy and ensured that they caused enough damage that it would take a while after they moved out for the house to go to market. The latter part was just an unspeakably lousy thing for them to do.

They knew I had been thinking about selling the place since last year. This year was the final nail in the coffin with the property management team, whom they despise as well. I know it’s very hard to find places to live during these times, so I made sure to give my friend as much advance notice as possible about my plans. By no means did I just spring the news on them out of nowhere.

55. Why Won’t You Play With Me

At the start of the pandemic to stay safe, my family and I packed up to go to my grandma's ranch where we don't get internet. My best friend was pretty chill for a little while, but one day, he snapped. He literally yelled at me over the phone and told me to stop being a wimp over the "spicey flu" so I could play games with him.

I actually had to explain that I have two young children and their safety matters more than a grown man getting to play video games. Yeah, our friendship didn't last too long after that.

56. Be My Pest

We let my friend crash at our place for a while when he was between places. While I was out one day, he got intoxicated and tried to intimidate my wife into sleeping with him. He told her: "If you don't do it, I will tell him you did and he will believe me." She suggested he go get some beers first and then locked all the doors.

She hid out at a neighbor’s place, where she called me and then the authorities. Officers arrived on the scene before I could get there. Unfortunately, they couldn't actually take him in for anything. Instead, they basically just told him he should: "Screw off to somewhere else or we will find a reason to throw you behind bars."

Good thing too, because if I had gotten there first, I would probably have gotten taken in myself for kicking his butt.

57. No Nonsense

She called me a lying piece of garbage when I said I was depressed. I was already annoyed with her for spilling a drink on my bedroom floor and refusing to clean it up, sharing the password for my phone hotspot, inviting me to her house when her parents said not to, which got us both in trouble, and insulting my crush.

She would even phone me at stupid o'clock in the morning asking for homework answers. That was the last straw, and I was so done with her stupidity.

58. I’ve Got A Secret

I'm married and one of my best friends was a woman, who was basically like a younger sister to me. My wife really never had any issue with it since there were no trust issues between us. Around our second year of marriage, this "friend" (who I’ll refer to as “J”) decided to spread a rumor to my coworkers that we had been having a one-time affair.

One of my coworkers told me and showed me proof that J was saying all this stuff. When I finally confronted her, she initially just kept lying about it, until I showed her the screenshots of her texts. Then everything blew up. She got angry at me for not caring about her, not loving her, and the fact that I “left her” by getting married.

Eventually, I found out that the “one-time” rumor wasn't a one-time rumor. Instead, she had been saying this stuff to her coworkers and family ever since I got married, including the claim that I was leaving my wife for her.

59. Sitting Duck

My friend invited me over to hang out. Thirty-five minutes into the get-together, she was like: “I will be right back.” She gets in the car with her boyfriend and leaves me at her house with her kid siblings. That's when it hit me. She literally tricked me into babysitting. I was 16 at the time, and I was really nice and naive.

The kids I unknowingly babysat were really good kids and their nice mother was at work. I eventually told off the “friend” after graduation. I didn’t realize until more situations like this that she was just using me. I just wanted friends.

60. I Didn’t Do It!

My best friend fell in love with a guy at work. She decided to run away with him, but then changed her mind. To cover up for her actions, she told her husband that I was the one who had talked her into running away. She also claimed that I had run away with her, because at the time I was getting a divorce. She told him I said we should both start over in a new city.

Of course, this story was all completely fabricated and I knew nothing about it. Needless to say, she went back to her husband and he thought I was a jerk from that point on. She passed recently at the age of 58. And, though I visited her irregularly while she was still around, I didn’t go to her funeral because of the awkwardness it would have caused.

61. I Now Present...

A “friend” found out that I had cancer. She took me out to eat. She then took me to a multi-level marketing presentation for a pyramid scheme. Thankfully, the cancer is now gone. So is my friendship with that girl. I took some free refreshment samples at the presentation, and then never spoke to her again. I was really hurt by the whole situation.

I sat in my car and cried after I dropped her off. It made me feel like garbage, frankly.

62. Band On The Run

My “friend” wouldn’t stop judging me for the dumbest things. They wouldn’t stop cussing me out for no reason. They said I was “academically dumb,” but yet they always came to me for help though. They said I wasn’t street smart. I can kinda agree with that one, to be fair. And they told me that my hobby and favorite activity to do (band) will get me nowhere in life.

I never said I wanted to do it as a job. Luckily, I blocked them out of my life and don’t deal with them anymore.

63. Falling Flat

When I was about fourteen years old, I lived in a granny flat at the back of my mum's house. I had a big group of friends who would stay every weekend. We’d have drinks, movie nights, and just hang out really. We were like a family and were all really close. Then, Mum put our house on the market and every single one of them stopped talking to me.

I think that’s still the most used I’ve ever felt. Probably because the friendships meant so much to me, and I feel like they just faked the whole thing for a place to stay.

64. In Sickness And In Health

This is currently happening. I had a stroke in 2020, and I’m young. I’m only 31 years old. I then found out that my kidneys were failing shortly after. I know it’s a pandemic, but not a single one of my friends have even so much as texted me to check in on me, nor have they asked my husband who they’re all also “friends” with. Literally everyone I know cut me off when I got sick.

Can’t drink? Not friends anymore. Oh well. I don’t need people like that in my life anyway.

65. Wake Up And Smell The Coffee

This really happened to me, with someone who was both a friend and a crush. He had asked me out for coffee. I seriously thought we would bond over our love of travel, but he slipped up when he said he had a “mentor” he would love to introduce me to. Our coffee date turned into an hour and half long sales pitch, where I politely tried to hide both my rage and cringe at him.

Obviously, I lost all interest in him at that point and phased him out of my social media contacts.

66. Leaving Without Stutter

I have a severe stutter and it’s always hard for me to make friends because of it. Luckily, I had a really good friend. She never got impatient or mocked me, right? Wrong. I'm normally very quiet and when in a group of people, it’s easy for people to forget I'm there. My friend (we'll call her Julie) had a small get-together at her house.

During dinner, a conversation was going on and someone asked my opinion on some random topic and I gave it, despite my stutter making it hard for me to say what I wanted. Later in the evening, I was sitting in the living room, sipping my scotch while Julie and some other guests were mingling in the kitchen. That's when I heard it—I could barely contain my tears.

Someone casually mentions me in conversation, and Julie said, "Ugh, why did you ask her that question? I can't stand it when she stutters everything. Like, just shut up and let the normal people t-t-t-t-talk." I sat there and listened to them laugh and make Porky Pig jokes and grew more and more hurt and angry. Someone said something alluding to my stutter meaning I was less intelligent and how Julie was such a good person for tolerating me.

I got up, walked into the kitchen and they stood there with a look of horror on their faces. Julie softly said, "Oh god, I thought you left." I left immediately and haven't spoken to her since.

67. Last Ride

Last Friday my friend, riding in the passenger seat, wanted me to drop her off at her boyfriend’s so she could live there...while her husband was in the backseat with their child literally crying because he is genuinely scared he will be unable to provide for their baby. Like I had to give him 20 bucks for food because this chick did not care what happened...

The mother did not care as she was heading off to get with her new boyfriend.

68. Always Keep The Receipts

Best friend in college for about four years. We were roommates. When her fiancé came home from basic, he moved in with us. They had a joint bank account. When I paid my half of the rent, I just made the check out to him (per her request). Yeah...he was cashing my checks and not telling my friend I had paid. This made her more than a little hostile towards me and wouldn't even speak to me.

I had no idea what was going on until I came home to an eviction notice and ALL of my stuff was put into black trash bags and sitting by the door. When I confronted her she accused me of never paying for rent/utilities and mooching off of them. Shut that down really quick with the copies I had of the checks written.

She stood there open-mouthed while I put my stuff in my car. Tried to apologize months later and wanted to be friends again. Told her I forgave her but didn't need "friends" like her in my life and to have a good one.

69. The Ol’ Switcheroo

I lived in an apartment with my best friend. It was going fine for almost a year, with no fights or anything. One day, his father had a stroke. He could no longer work or pay his bills so he needed a place to stay and my friend was adamant that his dad moves into the apartment, meaning I would have to leave the place, not him.

After some arguments (I was trying to make the case that I shouldn't be the one to move out because it wasn't fair on me—he should find a place with his dad) I finally decided to be the bigger person and move back in with my parents so that his dad could move into the apartment. Weeks later, I found out the dark truth.

I see a Facebook post about how happy he is that his girlfriend is moving in with him. The whole thing was a lie to get me to leave so his girlfriend could move in. The stroke was real, and I think his dad was struggling to find a place, but in the end, he found somewhere to stay. My friend just decided to keep the lie going so that I'd leave.

Haven't talked to him since.

70. Amateur Ghosting

I have a story where I lost all respect for three people at once. Late high school years. A “friend” in our group had invited everyone to hang out at his parent’s house. We were supposed to agree on a time the day of, but people weren’t answering my calls or messages or were really vague. It was almost 7:00 pm, which was a couple of hours later than I’d figured, so I decided to drive over. When I realized what happening, it broke my heart.

I sent one guy a message saying no one’s really answering so I’ll just go ring the “friend’s” doorbell. So, all of a sudden, the “friend” calls me and says he was caught up in something and the whole thing might be off, he’ll let me know. Thing is, he called me when I was just parking in front of his house and had a clear view of almost everyone in my group in his house.

I let the call go on for several minutes watching him motion people to be quiet, doing the talking hand “yadda yadda” gesture etc. without letting him know I was watching him, until the dude finally spotted my car. He then—very obviously—told everyone to hide because he thought I’d just pulled up, and one guy who also pretended to be my friend actually hit the ground together with his girlfriend to avoid being seen from the window.

So those three people—two “friends” and the gf of one—I have absolutely zero respect for. Also, I have nothing to do with any of them anymore, so that’s nice. Then again, I also very clearly saw one real friend tell the “friend” off. He also called me immediately and said to wait up, he’d rather hang out with me than those jerks.

20 years later we’re still very close and effectively formed a new group of friends. So big silver lining.

71. Something Fishy

I had a best friend who had just gone through a bad breakup and needed someone to move into her apartment to help her with rent. My boyfriend and I moved in and we all had a blast together for a few months. She and my boyfriend were close, but I never suspected anything. I'd painfully come to regret that. I worked six days a week and they were both unemployed, so they spent a lot of time together.

After a while, it was clear she and my boyfriend had some kind of a falling out because they both started to talk smack about each other when we were alone. It got to the point where we basically had to move out because the vibe in the apartment was pretty sour and I was stuck in the middle. He vehemently denies anything weird went on, they were just friends and then she started to hate him.

Soon after we moved out, my boyfriend was diagnosed with lung cancer. She was basically the only person other than him that I knew in this city at the time, as I'm from the other side of the country. She was my only support, and I called her to let her know what was going on. Her response was that she didn't want to deal with it, and she never spoke to me again.

72. One Up, One Down

The guy was (probably) a pathological liar who always, always, ALWAYS felt the need to one-up everyone. It got to the point where he even tried to one-up negative things, it was ridiculous. If you were into some sport, he was a world-class athlete. If you were into writing, he wrote a book for which he was complimented by several important and famous people.

If you had the flu, he had friggin’ cancer (not making this up, he actually lied about having cancer). I was gullible at first, then I realized he was full of garbage, but I decided to try to ignore all the idiocy and still be his friend. But finally, I snapped. I got sick of the constant humble and not so humble bragging.

Sometimes I feel bad about it, because in hindsight he clearly wasn't doing well if he craved attention and praise that desperately, but then I remember how bloody irritating being around him was during the last few weeks.

73. Who Wants a Cashless Card?

I have a friend who is known to be stingy. You can't split a bill with her at a restaurant because any way you do it, it's wrong. She bought her girlfriend a pair of sunglasses, and when she gave them to her she said, "I only got you these because they're buy one get one free and I got one for myself." (Don't ask me why they're still together.)

She has a well-paying job, a car, and her parents paid for college. There is no absolutely necessary reason for her to be this way, she just is. But even then, I had no clue how much of a real piece of garbage she truly was. Eventually, I found out that, for her entire college career, she scammed her parents into both paying for her apartment so she could pocket the extra money.

Her parents are divorced. She would call her mom up and ask for that month's rent money plus some other expenses. Then she'd call her dad and do the exact same thing. She knew they did not communicate with each other about her college expenses because she would ask when she needed money. Her parents are financially sound but not "rich" by any means, but they provide for their family.

I have no respect for that friend anymore. Side story: Her mom sent her a hallmark card for Halloween with a nice note, and her exact words after reading it were, "I'm going to have to call her, there's no money in this card."

74. Maybe They’re Just Roleplaying

I had a friend a while back. Neat guy. Liked video games, anime. One of the few people willing to go in on a pen and paper rpg. Didn’t interact with him outside of these sorts of events. One time, a bunch of us went to grab dinner before seeing a limited-run anime movie. This guy special orders absolutely everything. Won’t pick something on the menu (standard grill fare).

He doesn’t just ask for a special order, he DEMANDS it. Calls the waitress names and is just a total dick. When I confronted him about it, he started shouting and making a huge scene in the restaurant. The rest of the night was massively awkward. After that, I just ghosted him. People who treat others poorly like that have no place in my life.

You can tell the character of a person based on how they treat someone they don’t have to be kind to.

75. Lookers Only

I was once at a club with a guy I had known for about six months at college, and our respective girlfriends. We were quite a close group and he seemed like the most genuine guy you could know. Anyway, he gets into an argument with his girl and they both go outside to settle it in privacy, kinda ruined the mood but I thought little of it.

He came back to say that his girlfriend had gone home in a bad mood and they had essentially broken up. I remember he slyly said something like, "She lost her looks now anyway." A few days later I ran into his girlfriend—and I couldn't believe what he'd done to her. She had a swollen lip and a black eye. Never talked to that garbage human again.

76. Speak Up!

One-year friendship with this girl. I invited her over to my new apartment. She came over and wanted to gossip about her coworkers. When she paused, I tried to add into the conversation (make a joke, give reassurance, add a comment, etc.) but she would immediately raise her voice and start talking over me.

I kept getting angrier every time it happened until I was actually loathing her internally. She was so self-absorbed that she didn't notice I went from smiling and engaged to frowning while staring off into space. After two-plus hours of not being allowed to talk, I made up an excuse to kick her out of the apartment and then vowed to never see her again.

One summer back in high school years, I had a crush on this girl, and we'd hang out when we weren't working together. A friend of mine would keep insisting that I should just ask her out. So, I mustered my courage and asked her out. Yeah—it was a glorious fail. I still remember when she smiled and told me the brutal truth.

That was when I found out that they had been secretly dating for a year and thought it would be a "lark" to just screw with me. 100 to 0 in a few words and a vicious smile.

79. Selfish: An Ugly Color

Girl I was besties with for nearly ten years. I kinda knew that she was one of those emotionally needy types, but I just didn't really think it would end up aimed at me, I guess. She got laid off from her job around the same time my husband's annual checkup indicated possible prostate cancer. I posted on my journal about my worries and fears for him.

Friend replies to my post with a long public comment tearing me several new holes for being so selfish and self-absorbed, and how I only talk about me, me, me on my journal, and I'm not being there for her when she's going through the struggle of being laid off. I lose my mind and stop speaking to her (Husband turns out not to have cancer btw).

About a year later I get an email from her confessing that she realizes how insensitive and inappropriate her reaction was, we cautiously take up being friendly with one another again. A few months down the road, her brother-in-law's GF is pregnant and they make a painful decision to give the baby up for adoption for various family reasons.

She posts on her own journal boasting about how she tore the GF several new orifices because her and her husband have been trying to get pregnant for a few months, and the GF was so selfish and self-absorbed that she made these arrangements for her child's adoption without first consulting friend and friend's husband to see if they'd like to adopt the child themselves.

After a few more incidents like this I just kind of realized this woman was not the person I thought she was, and I distanced myself. When she realized what was going on, she lambasted me verbally and disconnected from the friendship. Thank god.

My maid of honor threatened to quit my wedding and alienate me from her friends because I refused to pay $600 to fly her daughter home for the big day. I politely [initially] said no, that wasn't possible. She persisted and listed all her money problems (she and her husband make at least $160 grand a year, have two kids and are JUST FINE) that included paying for the new car they just bought her aforementioned daughter.

I less than politely refused and said I didn't appreciate the guilt trip. She exploded and "couldn't believe I was saying no to her." SCREW THAT nonsense. So much for mature, meaningful relationships. I never knew she was that shallow or manipulative.

81. Dropped

Was best friends with a guy all throughout middle and high school. We did almost everything together—we were both in theater and speech and debate, had a lot of the same classes, and he lived nearby so I would always give him rides and such. If I had to choose one person to stay in touch with from high school and never talk to anyone else again, it would have been him. That made what was coming next even more painful.

Flash forward to a few weeks into freshman year of college. I notice I am no longer his friend on Facebook, so I text, then FB message, then finally call him and leave him a message demanding to know what the heck was going on. He texted me back saying, "I don't want to be friends anymore." I replied, "I don't understand, but if that is what you want, fine."

Barely spoken to him since. We both go help our high school speech and debate competitions, and don't say more than "Hi" or "Bye." He spread rumors that I was overreacting and that he tried to convince me it was a joke, but I was being a jerk. I lost friends over this. I pretty much don't talk to anyone from high school but three girls who never really interacted with him.

It has been two years, and people still bring it up to me and ask me what happened...Just a couple of days ago I ran into some people from high school and they asked about it. All I want to do is forget, but every time someone brings it up to me, I get upset again.

I frequently turned down their invitations to go out since my budget could not handle that kind of spending. Plus, I was trying to pay my own way through school. Well, one day, they sat me down and said that I should stop spending so much money on food and get my parents to pay for things.

I was also told to try harder at picking up another job so I could afford their lifestyle. I already had two part-time jobs and went to college full time. They stopped speaking to me not too long after.

I found out the awful truth two years later: the culprit was my best friend, and the twisted part was he "was there for me" the whole time. He was the one I called when I realized what had happened. Don't get me wrong, I am not a narcissist who needs validation, but he was always trying to make me feel bad about the things I did, like my job and all of my hobbies. Eventually, constantly needing to justify my life choices felt exhausting.

He had it pretty rough in high school, and I think he needs to make others feel less to feel better about himself. When we were young, I dismissed his negativity as just banter but we're in our 30s now, and I don't want to be around people like that anymore.

She did something, and when I told her it had hurt me, she said that it was mean-spirited of me to tell her that she hurt my feelings. I started to think about it and realized that she never took responsibility for anything she did. She had to be the hero in every scenario, and if she couldn’t have hero, she’d play the victim.

I started to clue into how she would surround herself with the kind of people who boosted her ego. Like, she had to be the prettiest one in the group. If things were going well for her friend, she would be visibly annoyed. She would stand on your shoulders to make herself feel tall. It was exhausting, and I’m so glad that I don’t have to be around her anymore.

93. I’m A Big Kid Now

They just never grew up. I had a career, a kid, a house, a long-term relationship, and the responsibility that go with them. He smoked every day and only worked part-time changing oil and tires. He would crash at my house for weeks at a time when he had nowhere else to really live. Now, I could have gotten past all of that.

But he felt like he had to always put me down or one-up me whenever he could. I'd say I had to get home, and he'd immediately say that I was whipped. I don’t want to go somewhere? I must be on my period. I didn't love his annoying friends? I must have had my panties on too tight. Whenever I was short on cash, he felt the need to show me his wad of cash that he made selling illicit substances. It made me cringe.

Back in the day, he did do a lot for me, normal stuff friends do, like help with moving, working on my car, late-night emergency help, etc. I eventually distanced myself from that friend group. Most were satisfied just hanging out in a basement stoned. I was more interested in being a good parent and moving up in my career.

I do miss the wild fun times we had at times, but I am also happy to have left those people in my past.

94. Always Something With You

I realized every conversation was all about her, her never-ending drama, and terrible life choices. I felt way too old to keep talking about her life; we were in our 30s, and her life was like a bipolar 20-year-old’s. We had been friends for almost 10 years and had been so close once. She had always been there for me.

She was there during the hardest and darkest time in my life, more so than even my family. But as time went on, I realized that every conversation was all about her. I don't think she cared for me at all anymore. She just was using me as her personal therapist. It came to a point when I found myself dreading her calls.

Like what insane drama was she calling about this time? It was just exhausting spending time with her. I just couldn't put any more of my time and emotional wellbeing into such a one-sided friendship. I still love her, and I miss the friend she once was.

He was too boring. It sounds awful, but he wouldn’t take one foot out of his very small comfort zone and would only go to the local village pub. We couldn't do anything else whatsoever on the weekends unless it was included in his already small social life. Our friends and I desperately wanted to go out into the towns.

We wanted to meet new people and experience new things while we're still in our mid-20s but could find no compromise with him. He's the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but not a great friend. They are not one in the same. He will not stick up for his friends or show loyalty if it means being decisive and rocking the boat.

You might imagine him an excessively shy person as a result of this, but he's not. He just doesn't have any interest in new things. We couldn’t organize a group holiday because he refuses to ever go abroad. He only wants to go the lake district. I haven't told him that I don't plan on doing the same thing each weekend.

The deal breaker is that my mom and sister who have no social lives of their own have chosen to befriend him. This meant if I ever tried to organize something with him there, I would be "excluding" them when I just wanted my own social life. It got so bad at home that I moved out. He was my best friend since childhood.

I had a falling out with my best friend and, at one point, they wanted to reconcile. So we had a day together and it was good. About two weeks later, I was summoned to court on traffic charges and accused of refusing to appear. It turned out that this “friend” of mine had recently been stopped by traffic authorities, did not have identification on him, and claimed to be me.

As soon as the judge read the case report, including the physical description of what was supposed to be me, he looked at me and dismissed the case. I never saw that “friend” again. I heard much later through mutual acquaintances that they had taken their own life. The whole situation is very messed up and sad on multiple levels.

98. Good, Bye

My "best friend" ran off with my girlfriend after swearing for weeks that he would never do such a thing. The best part was that I was that he was married at the time, and had been the best man at his wedding. It really hurt at the time, but in retrospect, I'm glad it happened. I got to kick two pieces of junk out of my life on the same day. Plus, I met my wife two years later, and I've never been happier.

99. Room Service

For a full year, my college roommate secretly slept with my boyfriend while I was in class. I routinely took more than a full course load and was in math and science classes or study groups every morning. One day, I walked in to see a horrifying sight. They were just fully in the act after I came back early from a canceled class.

I moved out. I was more angry at her than heartbroken. I also lost most of my friends through the breakup, and they stuck together for a good while. Fast forward five years later. Those two throw a crazy expensive engagement party at the guy's parents' beach house, which was attended by some still-mutual friends who told me everything.

At the party, she caught him sleeping with one of the waitresses from the catering company in a bathroom. They still got married. I feel a little bad for her despite the karma balance. She feels like she can't do better than being with a cheater.

100. Rubbernecking To The Extreme

She loved misery. I was driving her to work (she lived on my couch) and she was sobbing hysterically in the passenger seat, she really hated her job and was an unbalanced person. We come across a horrible wreck, her tears dry up instantly and she gets this huge smile, I’ve never seen her so happy. I ask what caused the sudden change and she starts laughing like a lunatic—side-splitting giggles.

She says that it looks like there were some fatalities due to the wreck and seeing it just made her day. I was pretty disgusted/creeped out. She was absolutely chipper for the next two days.

101. It’ll Take A Lot To Kill This Pain

I had this friend in college who I thought was just a friend. I always thought she was so cool because she’d do anything for anyone. Well, it turns out it was just me and most of the stories she told me were lies. She was prescribed painkillers for something and had no problems sharing them, as we hung out and got lit quite often.

We’d drive outside of campus through the cornfields and get high, listening to music and talking. One day she picks me up at my dorm and offers me a drink. Cool, but it’s already open. At first, I really thought nothing of it but then I take a sip and think something is definitely off. I taste the painkillers. Oooookay, maybe I’m paranoid?

I ask her to take me home and she asks if we can stop by her place first. Ok, but I think it’s a bit strange. We walk in and it’s literally trashed, dishes piled up, a few bags of trash laying around. She starts GOING OFF about how much she cleans and her roommates just trash the place, how she just “did the dishes yesterday and took out the trash.” I’m seeing food dried to plates, trying hard to understand how four girls can make three bags of trash in 24 hours, no freaking way she was telling the truth.

Then I realized how she was cleaning—dropping it low, thong showing, flirtatious talking—and now I realize I’m starting to feel the effects of the painkillers; with every new bout of blurred vision and itchy skin I realize need to get the heck out of there NOW. Texted my brother to meet me in the middle of campus and to keep heading towards her place if I didn’t show up.

The last thing that I remember is hugging my brother and then waking up the next day. She never tried to speak to me again but made sure to ask everyone we knew why I was mad at her to see if I told anyone. You’re lucky I didn’t, JESSICA! If a girl is obsessed with horses, run far, run fast and don’t look back.
