People Who Have Met A Celebrity Share What It Was Like

Most of us have a celebrity crush who we fantasize about meeting in person. At times, we may even dream about one day going on a date with them. Well, for some lucky people, that dream actually came true, and they took to the internet to share what the experience was like. Was it all they hoped it would be? Read on to find out:

#1 Three Dates With Natalie

A fairly close acquaintance of mine at the time went on a few dates with Natalie Portman when they were both at Harvard around 2002. He said she was exceptionally down to earth, genuine, and very engaging. I really don't know anything about Natalie Portman, but here's what I do know. She is so freaking cool, that a guy she dumped after just a few dates hesitated to even publicly acknowledge ever dating her. And after all, he lost the girl, so I completely understand his trepidation. A guy that humble, reserved, and mature at such a young age is freaking cool. But obviously just cool enough for three dates with Natalie Portman.

#2 The World's Most Famous Bachelor

My mom had a dinner date with George Clooney in the ’90s. She didn’t really say much apart from the fact that he’s an interesting and charismatic guy but she honestly didn’t think he was going to blow up. Her friend knew him back then, too—he was a shoe salesman, and her friend worked security. She said he talked about wanting to act and get famous. Everyone doubted him but he was always nice to everyone and a likable guy.

#3 The Doubting Dancers

My wife and I took ballroom dancing lessons many years ago. The teachers (a married couple) said that in the late '70s, they lived next door (or possibly a couple of doors down) from Keanu Reeves, who was just a young boy at the time. They said he came over often to play with their son and often ate at their place. The lady said that he always said he was going to get into acting and become famous, and they would just say, "Oh... okay, that's nice dear."

#4 The Lonely Life Of Fame

Not a date, per se, but I had a nice quiet dinner with Samantha Fox in her hotel room in Toronto in the '80s. She was in town for a show and I was attached to her security detail. She asked me to eat with her because she didn't want to go out but hated eating alone. Sweet girl, kind of sad too. Lonely. I do remember we talked about her growing up in the UK and being still amazed at her success. I do remember she said she looked forward to seeing the world on tour, but apparently the world all looked like the same hotel room. She never got to just explore and play tourist.

#5 A Gaga Night Out

A family friend's mom went clubbing with Lady Gaga. Afterward, Gaga asked if she knew who she was. My friend's mom had no idea. Celebrities probably enjoy having a conversation with someone who has no idea who they are and treats them like a normal person. Nowadays, Lady Gaga is not only famous for her music, but also her acting. She's incredible.

#6 Not A Single Clue

My best friend's dad was volunteering at a local festival many years ago and in search of a bathroom, he wandered into the backstage area. At that time, Velvet Revolver was a thing, and they were the show's headliners. My friend's dad ended up back there and the band was slowly getting ready for their set. My friend's dad asked Slash where the bathroom was and Slash pointed it out. He went to the bathroom while making small talk with Slash, then headed back. He had no idea who he was hanging out with.

#7 The Wildflower

Back when they were still a small bar band (I'm telling the story from memory, so I may be getting the part about them being small wrong), my mother had drinks with The Cult. The lead singer had told her he was in a band, but she didn't believe him. So when they played "Wildflower" that night, he dedicated the song to her.

#8 An Epic First Kiss

My aunt lived down the street from Leonardo Dicaprio when she was a kid. He was her first kiss (she was 12, he was 13, it was behind the school gym). Apparently he was a really nice kid. She moved away before he started landing roles. They totally lost touch. This is the reason I could not date a famous person. You break up and you have to see them advertised everywhere for the rest of your life.

#9 A Cleaned-Up Act

Not me, but my aunt dated Matthew McConaughey before he was famous. He ended up getting invited to her wedding as my “normal” uncle and proceeded to get pass out tipsy in the back of my family’s car. He refused to leave, and now my dad refuses to watch his movies! He then said in an interview that he kind of cleaned up his act in an effort to make it. I guess it worked.

#10 A Jar Of Pickles

My aunt went on a date with Jimmy Buffett. She said he picked her up, stopped at a gas station, bought a jar of pickles and then drove to the beach. They ate pickles and he took her home. Little did she know he went on many dates like this slowly eating each of the components of a cheeseburger on each subsequent date.

#11 Turning Down Gordie

Gordon Lightfoot asked my mom out once in the '80s. He was in town, went to the dentist before a show, and she was his hygienist. He asked her what she was doing for lunch, but she said she had a boyfriend. He told her to give him a call "if things ever loosened up" between them. My mom and that boyfriend have been married for 35 years... so things aren't looking too good for Gordie.

#12 Very Kind, Very Muscular

My friend's aunt went on a blind date with Gerard Butler, circa 300 (the movie, not the year). There was a big miscommunication because he was looking for a hookup and she's a kindly French-Canadian woman in her fifties, but they both had a laugh about it and enjoyed supper with each other. She said he was very kind and very muscular.

#13 Ouch, That Stings

My mom lived in Key West in the early-mid '80s. She dated Sting for a while. He had a really nice yacht and they went on a sailing trip during which he realized my mom is psycho (she is). He ended it right after. Sometimes to mess with my dad, I'll start singing Roxanne or Message in a Bottle. I always imagined Sting had a nice yacht.

#14 Immortalized On Vinyl

My aunt was married to Van Morrison briefly. They were pictured together on his album artwork. No interesting stories that I could remember. They were in love, but he was always gone so it didn't work out. I was told that he would play guitar for the fam on Christmas get-togethers. I wish I was a better spokesperson for her history, but I really can’t say which songs she influenced. The sad thing is, it’s not like I don’t see my aunt—we were just camping together at the beginning of the year when she told me this story.

#15 The Best Birthday Text

I have a family friend who dated Daniel Radcliffe. I was seven at the time they dated, and a huge Harry Potter fan. I don't remember much aside from the fact that he was a really sweet guy. On my eighth birthday, my family friend told Daniel it was my birthday and he texted me a personal happy birthday message despite never having met me. Absolutely made it the best birthday ever.

#16 A Romantic And A Mooner

My mom was really good friends with André the giant (André René Roussimoff) because he used to frequent her place of work. According to her, he was the sweetest, most gentle man she ever met in her life.He would give you the shirt off his back. He was a very calm person when talking with people. He was messed with as a child due to his size. She misses him. My mom also mooned Hillary Clinton and got a talking to by secret service.

#17 Dating Weird Al

Not me, but my aunt dated Weird Al Yankovic when she was in her mid-20s. I wasn't alive back then, but my family tells me he was a genuinely funny person in a way you wouldn't very much expect. I can't personally give any examples but my dad and aunt have plenty of stories. One of my much older cousins actually has a signed guitar that Al played in a live show. My aunt and Al met from my dad being a radio DJ as a teenager, and he met a lot of celebrities through that. Mostly '90s and early 2000s pop and country stars... But anyway, the station my dad worked at threw Weird Al a birthday party, and my aunt just happened to be there, and they ended up together for a decent amount of time.

#18 The Simple Life

About 15 years ago, when the show “The Simple Life,” with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie was popular I made out with Paris Hilton at a night club in Baltimore. Essentially, they were filming them doing all sorts of random jobs around the country and staying with local families all for the culture clash laughs. One of those families ended up being my friend and her family.

Being a close friend; and a well-known admirer of Paris at the time, I was invited over and got to hang with her and Nicole Richie a good amount while they were in town. Both of them were super sweet, and a lot smarter than they played for the camera.

Paris was a great kisser and this story is always a hit with my friends. A few months later, her phone was hacked and nudes were leaked. My number was in her phone book and I got spammed with prank calls from 4Chan, or something. I imagine it was a lot worse for anyone who was actually famous. Anyhow, I basically lost total contact after that. But still a fun story!

#19 The Superbad Date

Jonah Hill awkwardly slid me his number when I worked in a hotel he was staying at. We went to coffee once and he got super clingy. Asked me for nudes every day. I was 20 and a virgin. He wanted to throw me a 21-st birthday party in Palm Springs and when I politely declined he turned real "nice guy." He wasn’t even funny.

#20 I Wanna Know What Love Is

My uncle hooked me up to see Foreigner in 1981, including two backstage passes. I took a girl I really liked but she ended up meeting Mick Jones and disappearing with him into a dressing room. I didn't see her again that night. So I guess you could say I got duped by Mick Jones. I don't know if I should be upset or okay about it...

#21 No Help From The Wealthy

One of my dad's close friends is Jim Carrey's first wife. Apparently, he turned into a jerk when he got famous (shocking, I know). I remember a decade or so again when their grown kid's band was trying to make a living with their music—she really want Jim to help them get bookings and stuff and he was all, "They need to make it on their own." Then he got a new girlfriend who told him to help his kid out and he did.

#22 Surely Not Soulmates

My college roommates' cousin (I believe) went on a date (maybe multiple dates) with Armie Hammer before he blew up in "The Social Network." Apparently, he forgot all about the dates they went on and when he tried to re-introduce himself to her at another encounter, she said something along the lines of "I know... we used to date." Pretty sure the guy is married now.

#23 A Mindblowing Realization

I had an English teacher that went on a date with Mark Hamill just after filming Star Wars in the '70s. She said he was a nice guy and was very humble, he said he was a small-time actor and said he had just finished a new movie that he thought might be successful. They only went out once and she never heard from him again. She saw him in Star Wars a few months later and had her mind blown.

#24 A Real Nice Guy

Not a romantic date in the least, but I had dinner once at a Japanese restaurant (in a group setting) with Leonardo DiCaprio while he was in Louisiana filming Django: Unchained. He wanted to know what college was like and was asking us all about our lives. He also let me try his udon. It was my first-ever Instagram post! He really is such a nice guy in the limelight and in real life—it felt like we were hanging out with our friend.

#25 The Coolest Crew

My mom went to a party with Janis Joplin. She said she was wild, funny, but crude, and smelled like she hadn't showered or brushed her teeth in weeks. Janis Joplin died not long after. Also—I went to university in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Seeing Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, and the crew was a relatively common sight. The first time I saw them was the same night I got the call from my parents telling me that my family dog was put down (he was very old, very sick).

My friends took me out drinking and we ran into Bam and crew. Bam asked why I was down and when I told him, he bought my drinks for the rest of the night. I went out bar hopping with them a few times after that. They were nice but wild. I could never quite prepare myself for a night out with them. Ryan was as kind as could be and absolutely hilarious.

#26 A Rude Awakening

Years ago, at a hotel bar party, I saw Elisha Cuthbert. I sent a bottle of vodka to her table. Upon learning it was me who sent it, she motioned me over to her table. She promptly asked me if I was a criminal. She told me I was dressed like a bum. Then, she sent me back to my table with my bottle of vodka. That was my date with Elisha. I guess we just weren’t meant to be.

#27 Alright, Alright, Alright

A friend of mine hooked up with Matthew McConaughey. She’s a costume designer in Hollywood and was hanging out in the bar at Chateau Marmont when Matt comes up to her and said, “How 'bout you and I walk 30 feet and get naked?” Her initial response was no, but by the end of the night, her friends convinced her she had to do it. This was peak-2000s Matt when he was ripped and constantly shirtless. So she went up to his room at the hotel and they got it on.

#28 Money Cures Sadness

My wife briefly dated Louis CK back in 2012. She says it seems kind of awful to be famous. Any time they went out to eat or were in public, they were just constantly interrupted or stared at. He came to her birthday party at some little bowling alley in Brooklyn though and was pretty cool. The story that always sticks with me is that one day, he went out and bought a $150,000 watch because he felt sad.

#29 Jogging With A Legend

My friend's sister in law was out jogging when some other random dude came up and jogged with her. He talked with her about random stuff like the movie being filmed nearby at the time. After a bit of that, he said, "Oh, by the way, I hope you like the movie." They were filming The Force Awakens and she only realized later that it was Harrison Ford.

#30 A Missed Opportunity

Charlize Theron flirted with me when I was an extra in her first movie. She was a nobody and had a really small role. Then, her makeup or assistant told me I was lucky for that. I was shy and backed away because it was odd having a girl hit so hard on me. So yeah.

#31 Still A Prick

My mother dated Judd Nelson back when he was relevant. She said he was kind of a prick once she got to know him better, but his parents were cool. Weirdly, my family now lives like ten minutes from his parents’ place in Maine.

#32 RIP, Legend

I grew up without a TV, so I never watched movies as a kid. One year when I was 12, I went to a summer camp and became good friends with a girl for the duration of the camp. One day, she goes, “My dad is an actor. His name is Paul Walker.” And I was like, “Cool. I don’t watch movies, so I don’t know who that is,” and we continued playing. We stayed in touch until a few years later when he passed away, which was when I realized who he was.

#33 Childhood Friends

Salma Hayek is my dad's childhood friend. They grew up together in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. They never dated but they have remained acquaintances if not friends. I never believed him they were friends until one day we ran into her at the airport and she invited us for dinner. She is a really nice person and a lot of fun to hang out with.

#34 Get This Party Started

Not me, but my uncle dated the singer P!NK in high school for a little while. They went to Central Bucks in Pennsylvania. Pretty neat fun fact, but it always feels a little awkward when someone brings it up at gatherings because he is happily married now. This is also why I don't have any stories to share.

Apparently, she was super chill and down to earth. My uncle was the type of kid to create napalm in his backyard and set the neighbor's pool on fire, so I've always imagined she probably acted similarly at the time... but I could be way wrong.

#35 Bad Memory

One of my former best friends owns a luxury condo in Vegas, and Armie Hammer owns the condo right above hers. She has had to talk to him on multiple occasions because he likes to throw candy wrappers from his patio, and they land on hers. In the three or four times that she’s spoken to him, he’s never remembered who she is. Seems like his memory isn’t exactly the best.

#36 A Good Dude

My friend dated Dax Shepard in college. She said he's super nice and genuinely funny. "Just a good-hearted man." She said he didn't really express much interest in the comedy scene or acting at the time (or ever really), so she was surprised that's what he ended up doing. Still, this story makes my cold jaded heart happy. He just seems like such a good dude.

#37 A Bit Of A Bore

My sweet Nana, who typically only has nice things to say about anyone, was once set up on a date with Chuck Norris through a friend of her cousin. My siblings and I found out shortly after the wide circulation of Chuck Norris facts started so we couldn't wait to get the details. She told us, "He was a lovely man, but honestly a bit of a bore."

#38 A Humbling Reply

An old neighbor of mine had a co-worker (US Air Marshall) who sat next to Tom Cruise on a plane. He knew exactly who he was, but didn’t acknowledge him. After the flight, Tom Cruise thanks my neighbor, the US Air Marshall, for not making a big deal of sitting next to him. He said, “Let me sign something for you," and my neighbor replied, “Who the heck are you?”

#39 Dodging A Bullet

My mom went on a few dates with Phil Spector when she was young. She wasn’t that into him so she ended up blowing him off. I guess he remained persistent for a bit. She still considers it her missed opportunity but I’m pretty certain she dodged a major bullet.

#40 Clout Chaser

My boyfriend dated a girl who was on The Bachelor (they went on a few dates before she went on the show but mostly dated her after). He said her whole live revolved around getting famous and he was just not down for that.

#41 Garden Friends

Willie Nelson visited my mom's garden before one of his concerts (it's a community garden across the street from the venue). She fed him carrots and she really liked him a lot. Now, apparently, any time he goes back to do a concert there, he checks to see if she’s in the garden. He's a really nice guy, says a lot of people who know him.

#42 Political Ambitions

My mom went on a few dates with Ted Cruz in college. They were both in college republicans at different schools and met at the ‘94 RNC. She ended up not calling him back after a few dates because she said he always talked like he was giving a speech, but apparently he was planning on running for president even back then in his 20s.

#43 Dating Dwight

A teacher of mine dated Rainn Wilson for three months. She said he was a funny and kind man. They also went to Mexico together and when I asked what they did, she replied. "What happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico."

#44 Lucky Girl

A friend of mine dated Brad Pitt in college. Two or three dates, if I remember correctly. I went to a different school, but remember meeting him when I went to visit my friend.

#45 First Comes Loves, Then Comes...

I dated Flux Pavilion for seven years. It was great, so we got married in January. I enjoy running my own company so touring isn't really a problem. It’s nice to share my life with a person so creatively fulfilled. I love hearing whatever he’s worked on that day when he gets home. I get to tag along to cool places, and it’s sweet to see how much people care about his music. I generally don’t try to explain what he does when I meet new people because they either won’t get it and don’t care or they do get it, care too much, and then only want to talk to me about his music.
