These Eerie Supernatural Experiences Sent A Chill Down Our Spines

No matter how safe we may feel in our day to day lives, the world is a strange and frightening place. Things may seem fine, but we never truly know what lurks around the corner. Don’t believe me? Then read these stories from people who've been through utterly eerie experiences and lived to tell the tale. From creepiness to full-on horror, these supernatural moments will never be forgotten by the people who lived through them—not now, not ever.

#1 You’re Not Alone

A few months ago I woke up around three in the morning and decided to go downstairs to the bathroom. When I opened my door and peeked over the stairs, I saw a bright light coming from my living room. Upon further inspection, I saw that the TV was on a channel that was all fuzzy. There was no one on the couch or anywhere in the vicinity.

I yelled out my mom’s name, and as soon as I made a sound, the TV turned off and my bathroom door slammed. I checked every nook and cranny of the bathroom and found nothing. That moment still haunts me to this day.

#2 Hospitals Are So Haunted

On my first nursing job, I would work in a unit that served as an overflow, and that unit would close if the census was low (less patients in the hospital). The hospital was only a few years old, but there were strange things happening like the TV turning on its own in a room where one patient died and patient’s doors closing. I always joked that sun-downing in a hospital might as well be someone being possessed.

Two of our coworkers had the bright idea of going upstairs to that unit, turning on phone video, and asking aloud for the spirits to show themselves. I didn't join them since I was busy. But to their disappointment, nothing came of it and even the possessed TV did not turn on. But later, when they reviewed the video, they turned up the volume on their phone. They started to hear audible whispers. It was utterly terrifying.

#4 Nothing Is The Same Anymore

A long time ago I had a conversation with an old workmate who described something terrifying. The detail is hazy, but he said one day he in his house when he felt a sudden NEED to go outside an stand on his lawn, he claimed it was the strongest clearest feeling ever, and on doing so he experienced a sort of "wobble" he just said everything was screwed up for moment, and he experienced a feeling of detachment/outside-ness.

When it passed he turned to go back inside. Now, while talking to me he got quite upset at this point and asked me not to think he’s crazy but he said the next thing he saw was his car parked in the street and it was the same model/registration but a different color. He was so thrown at this, and then more so because then his wife came out to ask what he was doing, and he said he realized "She was in all appearances his wife, but somehow not his wife.”

He said from that point on, she liked foods she had claimed to hate before, and sometimes brought up memories that he said had zero relation to things they had done in the past. He said things like his route to work, was still the same but somehow different, he said there were buildings on the way that either he had missed in the six years he'd driven past them five days a week or had just "appeared" overnight.

He even said some people he remembered from other departments in work had just vanished, and asking about them brought total incomprehension from other people. He was a totally regular healthy guy, but he said he measured his life in relation to that afternoon. There were things that happened before the change, and everything afterward.

He went to say he was now living his life with a feeling that about 15% of it had spontaneously changed that afternoon. We moved on and drifted apart since then (different jobs) but I've never really felt so sure about the permanence of "reality" ever since.

#5 New Life New Family

My seven-year-old told me that his old family died in a fire with him, and now he has a new family (ours). He told me the names of his siblings, what his parents looked like, what the house looked like, and when he died. He gave me so much detail. I wrote it all down as he talked and after he went to bed, I looked it up. Everything he said matched this one old news story.

Everything he said fit. This news story I had never even heard before, and it happened about a year and a half before he was ever conceived.

#6 Fierce Protector

Once, when I was in university, I went to go see my therapist whom I had been seeing twice a week for about five months. On this day, he was uncharacteristically quiet, and I asked him if he was all right. He said he was fine, and we continued through what would be one of our most breakthrough sessions. A lot of repressed memories came up through it that have helped me to heal.

At the end of the session, I asked him why he was acting differently today than other days. He said, when I walked in I was accompanied by a warrior-like person. He said, he had the overwhelming feeling to perform as best he professionally could that day, and that he got the sense this “warrior” had fought a lot of battles to protect me.

This would seem coincidental, except for 10 years later, I was living on the other side of the world. I had a Puerto Rican neighbor I would see occasionally and eventually got pretty close with him, and his family. One day, as I was walking by he kind of gets quiet and weird, and then says in broken English, “do you know there is a soldier who follows you around?”

I knew instantly who he was talking about. In both instances the warrior/soldier was described the same, just over six feet, blonde curly hair, wearing primitive warrior clothing, and strangely “a white guy”. Neither of these people could have known that my closest brother who passed away at 14 was over six feet tall with blond curly hair, and always was my protector.

#7 Mysterious Photos Falling Out of Nowhere: Totally Normal

I’m an Atheist, but I will say that I have an aunt and uncle who bought a really nice older house that she was convinced was definitely haunted. Lots and lots of really creepy, unexplainable stuff was constantly happening.

One day my aunt was finally fed up with it and she asks the ‘ghost’ to show itself. Nothing happens for a while, but as she’s at the bathroom sink brushing her teeth before bed, an old photo of a young woman from the ‘60s or ‘70s fall out from behind the mirror and into the sink. The next morning, she gets a Catholic priest to bless the house and say a few Hail Marys. Nothing ever happened again. Her husband also shared with me a couple of other even more terrifying accounts.

#8 The Cat’s Meow

When I was a kid, I had a beloved black cat named Naruto. He passed away when I was in my teens, but I continued to have dreams about him for years afterward. One day after I moved out, I was having a nap. Naruto was in my dream, and at one point he reached out and scratched my face. I woke up with a start only to find the room blanketed in smoke. My roommate had forgotten food in the oven and left. I was able to get out and the fire department came, putting out what was, at that point, a large fire. I never saw Naruto in my dreams again after that, but I’m convinced he saved my life.

#9 Strange Visit

My cousin Dave and I were out on an all-day fishing trip, and he told me that if I wanted to spend the night at his place, I was more than welcome to. I hadn’t seen him in a while and I still wanted to spend time with him so, I said sure! He lived in a ranch style house with his wife of two years, and their seven-year-old son.

When we got back to his place, we had dinner, watched TV, you know did normal things. Eventually, his wife and son went to bed, which left us alone in the living room. That’s when I asked him, you like this place so far? He said “yeah,” but was making a face that I could tell he wanted to say more. He eventually followed up with, “Don’t get me wrong, this place is great but there’s just something weird about it."

An hour goes by and it’s getting late, and Dave can hear his son talking on the monitor so he decides to check on him. He enters his son's room with a “Hey buddy, why are you—” This is followed up by him shuffling to pick up his son, carrying him out, and slamming the door to his bedroom. Then he woke up his wife, and sent us all out of the house.

As soon as we’re out, he asks me to call the police. I oblige and while we're waiting I ask, “What happened man?” It took him a while to gather a response, and then he looked at me with the weirdest facial expression, and said his son “was sitting up talking to the closet, and when I looked over, I saw an old man, and I swear to god man, he was smiling at me.”

He was tearing up as he was telling me this. The police arrived, they check the house, no sign of entry at all, everything except the front door was locked. After they left, Dave made everyone sleep in the living room. Four months after that, they moved to a new house. I asked him once if he moved because of the man he saw. And he just shrugged it off. I think he saw him again. I mean, either way, something happened that night.

#10 I Saw You Drop My Gameboy

During a spinal tap procedure, I was put under. While under the anesthetics I had what I can only explain as an out of body experience seeing as how my viewpoint was from above my body looking down on the procedure. I watched the whole thing and saw that the doctor knocked my Game Boy off the tabletop while walking by, batteries ejecting from the fall.

One fell in sight and he picked it up but the other was next to the front left wheel under the bed out of his view…but not mine. I woke up groggy and told him where my other battery was and he was shocked when he found it there. To this day it still weirds me out.

#11 What Lies Beyond the Wall

I could lucid dream when I was a kid. I would actually get really excited to go to bed because I could decide what to dream, and then dream it. I had a recurring character in my lucid dreams, he was a boy my age with blonde hair. We would always play in this backyard/playground-type setting, that had a big brick wall on the edge.

One night, I dreamt that we really wanted to find out what was on the other side of that wall. We climbed a tree and the boy climbed onto the wall, looked back at me and waved, and went over it. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but the effects were chilling: I never lucid dreamed again after that. It actually caused me a lot of distress as a kid.

I legitimately missed him terribly and tried so hard to lucid dream again but just couldn't do it anymore after that.

#12 Eerie Phone Call

My uncle works for emergency dispatch in my town and he recently told my family of the weirdest call he's ever gotten. He says that he had received a call from a landline one night and when he answered it there was only static on the other end. This happened two more times. Finally, he calls a squad to go check out the address from the caller ID.

When the cops got there and walked into the house they immediately saw that there was a dead body. The person had been dead for five months. The craziest part about it was that there was no electricity or any other utility working. So there is no way they should have been able to get those calls into dispatch. But if they hadn't, who knows how long that person’s body would have stayed there.

#13 Almost Slipped Away From You

When I was little my family went to Mexico for a holiday vacation. I was playing in the ocean when I felt myself being pulled out to sea. My parents were distracted, but I remember looking up at my sister screaming just as my head went under the water. I’m not sure how long I was underwater, but two guys came out of nowhere, dragged me out of the water, and as quickly as they appeared, they were gone.

My parents looked all over the beach and never found them.

#14 A Father’s Warmth From Beyond

My dad died when I was five. Was raised by my mom and I have a twin brother who I'm really close to, but we aren't inseparable. I was in my second year of college bombing all my classes, had not seen family or friends in months and one of my best friends died a month earlier. Not trying to complain, but it was a hard time in my life.

Anyway, I'm alone in my dorm on my bed trying to do homework while I'm panicking about my future. All of a sudden, my blanket moves up my bed and around me while I was all alone and I hear a man’s voice say "You’re going to be okay." Sketched me out for months.

#15 Life Imitates Coma Art

This is really bizarre, but my uncle, a very serious, strict and rather dry man had an accident and went into coma a few years back. He never believed anything he couldn't touch, no talks about souls or anything similar. He was in a coma for a few weeks until he woke up and had this crazy story. He said he saw himself in a bubble, floating around in a white place and it was peaceful and beautiful.

But then he said about other bubbles he could see around him. All of them had other people in them. He distinctly remembered a black-haired woman singing in the bubble closest to his until one day her bubble burst and she disappeared. When he woke up, he could give a very clear description of her body, her age, and all that.

But now for the crazy part. There was a woman, one floor below him, in a coma that sadly had passed away before he woke up. You guessed it—black hair, age, body all correct. He had never met or seen this woman in his life. His whole idea of life changed after this. It still makes me think sometimes...Where was he?

He thinks all the people in bubbles around him were patients in the same hospital. Could it be? We'll probably never know.

#16 Waking Nightmare

My son was two. He was in a pattern of waking us up at about 5:00 am every morning. One morning I took him downstairs and plopped him in front of the TV so I could try to go back to sleep for about 30 minutes on the couch (right by him). I woke up a few minutes later and he was standing in the foyer, pointing into the kitchen, laughing. He then said, "Mommy is floating in the kitchen."

I didn't think much of it...went back to sleep for a bit. About 30 minutes later his mom came downstairs having just woken up, saying she "had one of those weird dreams where she flew out of her body, went downstairs and found herself in the kitchen." Freekay.

#17 Snail Mail to the Extreme

There was this abandoned school turned World War I military hospital near my house that my friend and I liked to break into. One day, we were rooting around the third floor and we found an empty envelope on the floor of a closet. It was old, and the address was written in script. It only had a name on it. That name on it was the exact same as my friend’s name, whose name is rather uncommon. We booked it out of there real fast.

#18 The Ghost of School Days Past

My friends and I used to frequently visit the abandoned Joseph P. Ladd school. It was rumored to have been haunted, but most of the time I had simply assumed that the strange noises that came from it were just other people on the property. I had never experienced anything supernatural there, or anywhere else for that matter. At the same time, I was still a bit on edge and nervous due to the rumors and from just imagining what could happen if they were all true.

One of the last times that I was there, I brought my crowbar along with me because the state had started boarding up and welding the doors shut. I knew that I could get in if I could wiggle a small space free in the door, as I had done a few times in the past. After a few tries, I started to get pretty aggravated, saying to myself “Is this even really worth the effort?!”

It was a pretty well lit night. The moon was really bright, so I didn’t need my flashlight unless I was inside a building. I also generally preferred to use it as little as possible, so as not to alert any security people to my presence. So, I’m peering through these two doors down the empty hallway with my flashlight, and about 50 feet down the hallway, what appeared to have been some light dust suddenly came into view.

The dust entered the area that my flashlight was aimed at, and then it suddenly turned around. I could now see the cloudy, barely visible outline of a chest, shoulders, and head. Nothing else. As it turned around, I can still vividly remember seeing what appeared to be the ghostly, misty outline of shoulders and a head moving towards the flashlight. At that point, as any sane person would do, I ran away and started screaming. I have never been so scared in my entire life.

#19 Private Tutor

When my son was about two or three, he wouldn't go to sleep so I let him into my bed. My husband was asleep, so I told my boy he had to look at his books quietly while I read mine. He was good for a bit, but then he suddenly started reading the book. Actually reading the words out loud. Slowly. He couldn't read and it was a newer book we hadn't read to him yet.

It wasn't memorization. I asked him how he knew what it said and he replied: "my friend John is telling me." Scared the hell out of me.

#20 Guardian Angel

I was eight months pregnant with my second child. I had to take my mom to a doctor’s appointment, she was getting a procedure and could not drive home after. I had my not quite two-year-old with me. He was in the backseat behind my mom in his car seat. I was driving a Jeep Wrangler. I pulled up to the intersection to make a left turn. I was in the crosswalk and the light turned red.

I heard a loud man's voice tell me to "BACK UP NOW!" I put the car in reverse and backed out of the crosswalk. I did not have time to look up or put the car back in drive when I heard a loud crash. Two cars collided in front of me and a SUV was where my car just was. On my hood was the headlight cover for the SUV.

As the police, fire dept. and EMS showed up they wanted to treat me since I was really pregnant and I had to keep telling them we were not involved in the accident. One EMS guy picked up the plastic on my hood and said "How?" I told him what I heard. He said "I guess you have an angel." My mom did not hear anything. I still don't know what that was.

#21 Leave!

I was stationed in Seoul, South Korea several years ago. I was taking a shower in my room and when I got out, the word "leave" was written in small letters in the fog on the bathroom mirror. I didn't have a roommate because NCOs got their own private rooms. A little freaked out, I decided to do exactly that—leave. I went off post for some Korean BBQ and wandered the city a bit.

I came back a couple hours later to find the barracks evacuated and half burned to the ground. The fire was pinpointed to faulty electrical wiring that caught some insulation on fire inside the walls. Something knew it was going to happen and to this day, whatever that something was, it didn't want me in the middle of it. I'd gladly thank who or whatever it is if they'd give me the chance but it's been years and I still have no idea.

#22 Ghostly Lullaby

My daughter Madison told me, at around age three, about "Kellum," the man with brown pants and a yellow shirt that played with her. I assumed it was an imaginary friend because... well that's what kids do. Then one day, she starts singing a song I'd never heard before. "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer doooo. I'm half-crazy all for the love of youuuuu," then she'd mumble a few words and pick back up with "a bicycle built for twooo."

I assumed she'd heard it from her babysitter, but when I asked about it, the babysitter tells me she thought my husband and I taught her the song because she didn't know it either. So I asked my daughter where she'd heard the song and she tells me "Kellum taught it to me. He sings it to his baby." Eventually, Kellum faded away.

Fast forward to about five years ago, I'm telling the story to a coworker who recognized the song as an old tune called, "Bicycle Built for Two.” That prompted us to start looking on ancestry.com at my property address history. I start following rabbit holes and found out that in the 40s, a man named Callum Beasley owned the property next to ours. He was the father of five children, youngest died at age three. Her name was Madeline.

#23 Super Eerie Country Creature

I lived in the countryside as a child, literally middle-of-nowhere territory, and my bus ride was an hour long so I had to wake up very early to catch it as it went by my house. I had no neighbors for a few miles around, and the stretch of road I lived on is flat and you could see a good mile in either direction before it curved off again into the forest which is cut back about 10 feet on either side of the road because of the electric poles.

It was winter and the plow had banked it three feet on either side, and I was waiting atop my driveway at 7 am before the sun has even come up, but there is enough light to see, especially since there is all the snow. To my left, I see something running on the opposite side of the road. I can't tell what it is because it is so far away, but I can see the silhouette against the snow, and I remember thinking to myself that I'm lucky to see a deer, because I enjoy wildlife. They often run along the road when the snow is deep, I've seen it before, albeit when the sun is higher.

I realize that its gait isn't right for a deer. It's now halfway to me, and I come to the absurd conclusion it's a man, running. As the figure jogs closer and closer, I can see he's not exactly wearing winter gear, like I am, all bundled up for the -10F, in fact he's barely covered at all. I feel uncomfortable and disturbed.

At 20 feet, he veers from his course and comes/directly at me/diagonally across the road. He's running and to me it feels too fast for a man.

It stops in front of me, just this grey naked silhouette at 7 am that I can’t see anything in or about, and I'm just petrified, standing there, looking at this thing, that's just standing there looking at me. It doesn't say anything, do anything, just stands there.

This happens in the course of maybe three seconds.

Then it turns and runs back the way it came.

I wanted to leave and go hide in my house, but my bus would be there any second and I didn't want to be yelled at by my mum. So I stood there terrified, watching that thing just run away until it had cleared the bend of the road. 10 minutes later the bus arrived and I was on my way to school.

I tried telling myself it was just a jogger, or someone playing a prank, but no one lives near me. When I got off the bus that evening, I couldn't find one footprint in the snow on either side of the road and there should have been, there should have been at least one footprint from this thing because it hadn't snowed while I was at school.

I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

#24 Sharing a Dream

I get teary-eyed every time I tell this story. My dad flatlined with a failing heart. When they brought him back the doctor asked where he had been. My dad said he was picking blueberries with his long-deceased mother and his sister. 1,609 km (1,000 miles) away, that sister woke up in the middle of the night, woke her husband and said something was wrong with her brother.

She had been dreaming that she was picking blueberries with my dad and their mom. He died a few months later. Miss ya, Dad.

#25 Missing Person

I got admitted to a psych ward a few months ago for suicidal stuff, but was placed in acute care (for the really crazy people) because the depression one was all full. All sorts of nutty people were around me. It was a living hell. I'll be honest, I'm not sure if it was meds or just lack of sleep, or what, but I swear to goodness, I kept seeing this very dark-skinned African-American lady just lying around everywhere.

Out in the grass during smoke break, on the bench of the cafeteria tables, and on the floor in the hallway. I introduced myself, and she said her name was Shul. Everyone else acknowledged that she was there and tried talking with her, but she really said nothing. I think the story was that she just moved here from a faraway country (not sure if that's true, or just rumors I heard from other people).

I remember one night, I actually started crying because I missed my wife and daughter so bad. I went out and talked to a tech who said that he would try his best to get me moved over to the depression ward. As I was talking to him, I saw Shul screaming and getting thrown down to the floor and carried off by six other techs. There were six of them because Shul was definitely a large woman (not fat, but just very large).

The next morning when we asked where Shul was, the staff all kept denying that they even had a Shul. I know I wasn't the only one, because other patients were asking for her too. And one patient said she left behind a shirt. I still can't explain it. Did we imagine Shul, or did the staff make her disappear? Either way, it's the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced.

#26 Without a Trace

A while back I was in NYC with some friends and we noticed this weird story on a newspaper (maybe the Times?) about a girl who had fallen from on high in Union Square, possibly off a building. The girl got up, apparently unharmed, and ran off into the crowd of onlookers. The police looked into this, but didn't have much luck until an anonymous envelope containing the picture of this girl was delivered to them.

The picture was included in the newspaper story. We thought this was pretty interesting, so the minute we got home we googled the story and...got nothing. We've never seen any articles on this girl, anywhere. Everybody we've asked about the story, including people who live or work around Union Square, claims that they've never heard anything about it. This was about three or four years ago and we've found NOTHING.

#27 Belief Shattering

I was at a friend's dinner party once when he revealed that one of the guests was a respected psychic. I am a huge skeptic but the psychic agreed to do a reading for us. We were all in the living room—maybe 20 or so people. She began with the expected stuff we think of when we think of a psychic doing a cold reading.

I had had a few drinks and was feeling pretty loose so I was just observing and waiting for her to do anything interesting that an observant person or someone trained in cold reading couldn't do. About 20 minutes into it, she stopped and said "OK, there is a stronger power than mine here and it needs to be acknowledged."

I perked up, thinking things were about to get interesting. She said anyone who had anything to say should speak up. She asked us to look around the room and allow ourselves to see one another clearly and look into each other’s eyes. If we felt impressed to tell someone something, we should. I will admit that I felt a little drawn toward a woman I had never met.

Her name was Tammy. I didn't say anything. The room was silent and the silence got awkward, like when a teacher waits overly long for a student to respond to a question s/he clearly doesn't know. So she probed again. "Someone here has a strong gift and needs to tap into it. There are messages waiting to be heard. If you feel drawn to someone, say so."

There was another silence. Then, she looked right at me and said, "Oh my God. It's you. You are a gifted empath. You must speak." I blushed and kind of laughed it off, but several of the guests insisted that I must speak my mind. So, I said I was feeling drawn toward Tammy. The psychic asked me to let my guard down, "reach out with your mind" she said.

So I tried to let my mind go blank. Suddenly, I could hear the Journey song “Don't Stop Believin'” in my head. Not my usual stuff. Then I started to feel sad. I'm normally a pretty happy guy, and this odd wave of sadness just came over me. At the same time, the name "Mark" came into my mind followed by an urge to tell Tammy thank you.

I didn't know what to do. The "psychic" told me to just start talking—describe what I was experiencing. So, I did. I closed my eyes and started to talk. As I got to the "thank you" part, I started to choke up and cry a little like I was actually feeling extreme gratitude. I opened my eyes and Tammy was white as a ghost.

Her friend Mark had died in the early 90s from complications with AIDS. She had been the only person in his friend group to visit him, and she did so regularly. The song had been their "pep" song, and she said Mark had died unexpectedly after seeming to have rallied a bit. Tammy was trembling. I was shaken.

#28 A Matter of Perspective

In Okinawa, there was a house near the USO on Kadena Air Force Base that was abandoned. A man killed himself and his family in it. It was said to be haunted. It was even part of the ghost tours they gave on base. Reports said that the outside lights would turn on by themselves and creepy things would happen. One story was that a woman could be seen washing her hair in the sink in the kitchen through a window.

The creepiest thing by far was that this house shared a chain link fence with the daycare building. My friend’s mom worked at the daycare. Children, four to five years old, would constantly throw toys over the fence. When asked why they said they wanted to play with the children on the other side. All of the kids saw these other children, but the adults could not.

It thoroughly freaked out anyone who worked there.

#30 Pool Rules Say No Running

I worked at a public pool, I would work alone after hours cleaning the building, and the pool. One night around 2 am, I'm cleaning the change rooms. The pool has been closed for four hours at this time. I hear the sound of a child's laughter and bare feet running across the pool deck. I go out and scan the area; there's nobody in sight.

The doors are all closed and locked, there is nowhere a kid could be hiding. No wet footprints on the pool deck. I re-check the doors and the security monitors. I am the only person in the building. It was unsettling.

#31 No Car Pile Up

I'm way too late to this party but this is a true story that nobody believes. I was driving northbound on I-5 into Seattle at about 3am. It was raining very, very hard and I drove under the Convention Center in downtown Seattle, which is like a tunnel. When I got out from under the center, I saw something that made me slam on my brakes and skid to a stop in the middle of the freeway.

There were five cars upside down in the middle of the road. I thought I had happened upon a horrible accident, but then I realized there was not a single person in sight... the cars were completely empty... no headlights on... no cops.... no fire trucks... no ambulances... no tow trucks... and then I realized what made me hit the gas and get out of there... not a single dent on any of the vehicles.

They were just sitting there, upside down in the middle of I-5. It has freaked me out to think about ever since and everyone thinks I'm making it up but that was a glitch if ever there was one. I checked the news for days afterward and couldn't find a report. Weeeeird.

#33 Feeling The Bug In The Matrix

I was waiting for the bus next to a busy road and I was starting to feel anxious, so I decided to stand up and walk about 50 feet away. I already felt better. So I started walking back and at that moment I saw a truck lose control and demolish the spot where I’d been 20 seconds before.

Since then, I believe that people have destinies.

#34 Are You There, Dad?

I was visiting my mother after my dad died. She went shopping with her sister and left me alone. I heard my dad as plain as day up in his room. He got up from his computer chair walked over to the door and opened it. He walked down the stairs and stood on the last step for a few seconds before walking back up to his room and closing the door.

I was probably five feet from him in the living room. I just froze. It scared the heck out of me.

#35 I See You

I was nine and watching Spongebob. I went to the kitchen for a drink, and when I came back, the TV had a message: "Welcome back. Did you like your drink?" Scared like crazy, I went to the living room to see if the message would still be there (like turning it off and on again). When I came back..."You know, I'm not like cake. I'm still here when you get back."

Truly scared by now, I get my dad. And like every cliché horror movie, the message ain't there.

#36 Try Turning the Mirror Off and On Again

When I was young (maybe five or six) I was watching a movie alone in my parents room because there was no VCR in the living room. On the wall adjacent to the bed was my mother's large, old vanity. I remember seeing movement in the mirror, and assumed it was the cat in the room at the time. Again, I saw movement, so I stood up, and looked directly into the mirror.

I remember seeing the strangest thing. My reflection, and the reflection of the room, was completely off. Like, if I waved my hands in the air, the reflection would also wave it's hands but would be completely out of sync and different from mine. Always freaked me out of mirrors from then on.

#37 I’ll Stick With Uber

My grandfather and his four brothers spent their summers at their family's bay house (more of a shack, really) in Fairhope, Alabama when they were young. It was a five-minute walk to the Mobile Bay, and growing up around there, I can personally attest to the areas long history of spooky stuff. One night, my grandfather and his brothers were sleeping on the house's screened-in front porch, with air conditioning not being readily available and it being South Alabama in the middle of summer.

My grandfather and his brothers are fast asleep in the middle of the night, and an old taxi drives up and parks in front of their house. A man and a woman get out of the cab dressed in seemingly weather-worn wedding attire, top hat/tails and all. They walk up to the house, and the woman scratches the wood siding of the screen door with long fingernails, and the pair proceeds to go back and get in the cab.

All the boys were awoken by the sound of the scratching but were way too scared to move or make a sound til morning. The next day, my grandfather brought it up to his brothers, and they all confirmed it actually happened and wasn't a dream. They called the woman the Witch, and claim to have seen/heard her multiple times throughout their lives.

A few years ago, I went to see the house before it was torn down, and there were five scratches spaced in the same way that fingernails would leave on a wood plank. I told the owner the story, and he became visibly disturbed, telling me about an old taxi that would park across the street occasionally from midnight (ish) til right before daybreak. Still gives me the heeby jeebies.

#38 Stay Out of the Woods

My now 11-year-old daughter had an "imaginary" friend when she was five. Her name was Elizabeth and according to my daughter, "She has dark hair but some of it is orange looking like it's dirty from Koolaid. She has a bloody and messed up leg and she limps because she was run over. Not run over by a car because it didn’t have an engine. She is darker than me like she has a really good tan."

As though that wasn't creepy enough, one day she asked if she could have a sleepover with Elizabeth. We say "sure" and then my five-year-old starts walking towards with woods with a backpack. I rush out to stop her, and remind her of our rules about not going into the woods alone. She's really upset because apparently "Elizabeth" lives in the woods, and that's where the sleepover was supposed to happen.

It gets creepier. A year after all this, the county finally decided to repave the nearby road. When speaking with the project manager, we found out that the road was actually the end of the Trail of Tears and that somewhere back here was the site of an ambush that resulted in the deaths of several children, and adults when they were crushed by rushing wagons.

#39 Money Problems

I started believing in ghosts when my grandma passed away. At that time, my husband and I were having several economic problems. So, the next days after her funeral, I started to dream about her, and she told me on my dreams, that if I need money for an emergency, just check under her mattress, and I will find $1,500 Mexican pesos.

I just ignored it, but those dreams were repeating again and again... So, I decided to take a look under her mattress and GUESS WHAT??? I FOUND $1,500 MEXICAN PESOS…!!!! And since that event, I haven’t dreamed of her again.

#42 Horror Unmasked

I used to live in a rented house that, along with my neighbors, sat across the street from a fairly bustling city park. At night, when the park was deserted, I would walk out my front door, sit on my porch and look at the trees and the stars. One night, around 1 AM, I opened the front door and started to sit down. That's when I saw a man standing in the deserted park.

He was directly in front of my house. The man was dressed all in black and was wearing a Halloween skull mask. The mask seemed fairly intricate, but was most definitely a store-bought cheapo. The sight of this guy sent a chill down my spine. He didn't move at all—although I know he saw me. The entire neighborhood was silent and still and we just paused there holding our ground.

We watched each other for a long time until he finally sauntered away. I ended up calling the cops because I figured this guy was casing the neighborhood. Cops came, took my statement. Nothing ever came of it. A couple of months later, I'm doing some yard work around the side of my house. I'm pulling a huge tangle of weeds out from a thicket underneath my kitchen window.

I see something that looks like trash and pick it up: it's the mask I saw that night.

#43 Don’t Sleep in the Silo, Darling

My mum told me this story about the village where she grew up in Scotland. The village's earliest known settlement is from 3,000 BC, so it's old. It's been home to the Picts and the Romans. Nowadays there is a small woodland and the rest of the surrounding land is farmland. The woods used to be much larger, they are what survives of a large forest that almost completely surrounded the village.

Legend says the forest was home to witches. When the forest was being cleared for expanding farmland, a lone witch came out of the forest to tell the villagers to stop. She said the trees would not forgive man for their destruction, and if the villagers did not heed her words then all of their land would become infertile. And all the women.

Frightened, the villagers agreed, but asked for a small part of the forest. A deal was made that this, and only this, land could be cleared. The witch also said that for every harvest of every crop grown there, one sack of produce must be taken to the edge of the forest and left. This practice was followed for hundreds of years until the villagers abruptly tore down much of the remaining forest to grow wheat and build a mill.

Again a strange woman came from the forest into the village and threatened the villagers. She said they had broken the promise and would suffer. This time the villagers took the woman and hanged her. Her last words were that the price was now three sacks. The man who built the mill was scared and after the first harvest, he took three sacks into the woods. Unlike his neighbors, his crops did not fail and his wife became pregnant. Always, he paid the woods their due, and before long he was the richest man in the village with three beautiful, healthy daughters.

Unfortunately, the man grew greedy and thought he'd no longer pay his three sacks. The next morning, his youngest daughter went missing. The whole village came to help look for her, but the man asked that his men run the mill as normal so he didn't lose any money. There was soon a commotion at the mill, some of the workers had fainted, others were crying, some were shouting.

The man came to see what was happening. A horrified worker told him they had started up the mill as normal, but blood had poured from between the stones. They had found his missing daughter. Distraught, the man sold his land and fled the village with his family. The mill was torn down and years later a silo was built there. By the 1960s, the silo was ancient and crumbling. It was also rumored to be haunted either by the farmer, his daughter or the witch. Sometimes all three.

This part is my mum's story. One day she and her friends had a bet to see who could spend a night in the silo. One boy who was always boasting of his bravery volunteered. Between them, my mum and her friends conspired to keep this a secret from their parents by lying about camping in each other's gardens. That evening the boy, John, climbed the silo loft and mum and her friend gave him a bag of food, a blanket, and a torch.

They told him they'd be back in the morning, but were actually planning on coming back later to frighten him. They had waited a few hours and snuck back to the silo and alarmingly they could hear John sobbing and crying for help. They found him quite a way from the silo pulling himself along on his stomach. John had jumped out the silo loft and broken his ankles.

He was carried back to his parent's house and taken to hospital. After the inevitable week of punishment, my mum was allowed to visit John. She said he still looked as terrified then as he had that night. She asked him what happened. He said he told his parents and the doctors that he fell, but the truth was he saw something.

Not long after he was left on his own he could hear something shuffling around in the loft. He used the torch to see but there were only empty grain bags. He tried to ignore the noise but finally, it sounded like it was moving toward him. When he shone the torch on the grain bags again he saw that they were crawling, dragging themselves along the floor towards him. That’s why he jumped.

The silo's long been demolished, but they've built homes there now. Eeek!

#44 Kevin is Here

I used to "talk to ghosts" when I was younger. My parents told me I talked to a little boy named Kevin that would appear at my window, and come into the house to play. I would talk to him for hours, and a bunch of creepy things would happen around the house. I'm both the youngest and an only child—my half-sister and brother are 10 and eight years older than me, respectively.

I am my mother's only child, so there was no one close to my age to play with. The weirdest part happened after I was an adult, though. My niece was standing in the hallway one day looking into my old bedroom. She turned to my brother and asked: "Who's the little boy in Tia's room?" Recently, my brother and his family moved into our childhood home.

His youngest daughter, three years old, now has an "imaginary friend" named Kevin who comes in through her window. The same window he came through when I was a child. No one in the family ever told her about him.

#45 A Call From The Other Side

A little backstory...I was a total idealist back in high school so, when choosing a college, I chose to go somewhere that none of my friends were attending so that I could strike out on my own in a "finding myself" sort of way. Well, I ended up making a few really close friends during my first semester. I mean, these guys became like family to me in a matter of months.

One day during winter break one of those guys, my buddy Kimbo, had gone back home to visit friends and family and on his return trip to our college hit a bad patch of ice and got into a car accident and was killed. It hurt deeply for a long time and I still think about him all the time. Anyway, a few weeks after Kimbo's accident me and the rest of the guys were getting back from a party off campus and as we were standing outside our dorm building smoking a cig I felt my phone vibrating, and when I pulled it out, I saw that I was getting a call from Kimbo's phone!

Dumbfounded, I showed my friends the phone quickly and then answered. When I picked up it just went directly to his voicemail which played the same message it always had… It never happened again and we never really talked about it but for me, it was one of those "someone's looking after me" moments. I hadn't been doing very well after his death but seeing his name show up on my cell phone screen one final time made me feel a whole lot better for a time and really helped me get out of the slump I was in.

I have no idea how his phone could've possibly called me and I doubt I ever will but this was one "glitch in the matrix" that I'll forever be thankful for.

Rest in peace, Kim. But feel free to call again.

#46 Shh

Some friends and I went exploring in an old abandoned “slave church” in the deep south Georgia woods. There were graves dug up in the cemetery and the church itself was all falling apart. There was one hallway with a room in the back that had the door cracked. I was the first one in the hallway and as I got to the door to the room in the back, I heard someone in the room go “shh”.

I went to turn and run out of there but my girlfriend at the time was leaned against the wall in a daze looking at the ground. I had to grab her hand and pull her to get her going. It was weird.

#47 Sounding the Alarm

Used to work in a personal care home. A couple of times a day or so after a resident had passed, their call bell would go off in their room. No one was in the room when the call bell went off on any of the occasions. We had one resident die pretty traumatically (nurses had to perform CPR because he was a full code). That night, the midnight staff said they saw him at the end of the hall just walking down like he always did. Then, the alarm on the door to the outside (it was a secured unit for Alzheimer's/dementia) went off. It was the door he always tried when he was looking to get out.

#48 Spinning

Obligatory "background story": my brother passed on a few years back. When my mom and I would visit his grave, and a small pinwheel she'd put out there would spin. My mom swore that it would spin any time she'd visit. I never disagreed, as it would be rude to do so. But I didn't believe in anything like that.

However, I recently went to visit him—and I guess I was feeling bitter and cynical. So I said something along the lines of "I'm not an idiot, I know that thing will spin no matter what. You're not here anymore." Mind you—it was WINDY outside. And the thing just stopped spinning. Just stopped completely. I was shocked and cried for a little bit. I have no idea what it meant, or if I'm thinking about it too hard.

#49 What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie?

Three years ago our very elderly next door neighbor died suddenly in her house. They found her body five days later in the kitchen. Fast forward to last summer. I'm sitting in my house watching a movie and all of the sudden about eight police cars come out of nowhere sirens blaring lights on and most park by that empty house. Some park in my driveway so I went outside to see what was up.

A police officer went through the quick formalities and asked if I had seen anything strange in the past five minutes. I replied no and rather hesitantly asked what was going on. He said that the police department received a call from the house and when the operator picked up the line went dead. I stayed at a friend's that night.

#50 Teddy’s Last Words

When I was around 16, my rapidly growing family finally moved from the house I had spent my entire life in. As you would expect, we spent a lot of time fondly remembering things we used to do in the house as we were packing everything up. At some point, I decided to go into the downstairs closet with a flashlight and read, something I used to do when I was younger to get some peace and quiet.

Now, this is one of those deep closets that goes under the stairs; it went back around eight feet and then had a left turn into a very low, maybe three-foot-high, space. This space was largely occupied by a mountain of old blankets and stuffed animals. Of course, this is the most comfortable spot to settle in and read.

About an hour in, I shift a little to get comfortable and I hear a low, slow, warped, hoarse voice say, "You always make me happy." I flipped out, hit my head on the low ceiling, and practically broke the door down getting out. After hyperventilating and explaining to my family why there was no color left on my face, I went back to see what it was.

It was my stuffed Little Bear from when I was three or four years old that I happened to lean on juuuuust right to press his belly. When I pressed his stomach again though, nothing. This poor bear I hadn't played with since I was a toddler used the last of its power, used it's dying breath to tell me I made it happy. You make me happy too, little bear.

#52 Doggone It

I remember that when I was young, I was always excited and would rush to get to bed, something that a kid never does. I would ask to go to bed early, so I could see "them." My bedroom was set out in a sort of U-shape. My bed was in the middle and everything was set around facing me. I didn't have a TV in my room and only had the basics.

I remember laying in bed, it being pitch black with only some light coming in from my curtains when two kids would come out—I don't know where from. They seemed to step out of the darkness and would sit on my bed and talk to me about my day, calling me a "Silly Billy." My dog Sophie would often come rushing into my room to jump on the bed. I would calm her down, kissing and petting her but upon looking up, the girls were always gone.

I think my room was being decorated with new wallpaper and I stayed in my parents' bed for a few nights. They put me to bed with some warm milk, cookies and a Disney film on their TV. The two girls would come out from my room and sit on my parents' bed and watch the film with me. I remember grabbing some cookies and my glass of milk and offering it to them and one of them looking really happy, shocked and the older girl shaking her head saying, “We can't.”

They both had white nightdresses on and their hair was in a bun. They never had any shoes on and they would come and see me almost every night up until I was seven. I honestly can't remember their names, this was over 20 years ago. They always seemed terrified when my dog would run into their rooms and vanish.

My mum later found out that 15 years before, two young girls got attacked by a neighbor's dog in our yard and died.

I used to work in a skilled nursing facility. I was usually assigned to the Alzheimer's ward. One night I'm in the linen room stocking my cart, and I heard someone shuffle up behind me, then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and there was no one else in the room. The door was still shut too. Another lady started to complain that a man was coming into her room at night (again, Alzheimer's so I didn't think much of it).

So to reassure her, I told her I'd check on her throughout the night. She complained of this man every single night for two more weeks when I asked her to describe him to me. "He's real handsome, and wears a black suit. Oh. He's right behind you now, honey." That freaked me the heck out. Of course, there was no one behind me. She died the next night in her sleep.

I was a teenager reading in the living room one day when my mother came out of her bedroom looking shaken. I asked her what was wrong and she said she was lying in bed reading when she distinctly heard an old friend of hers, Helen, say, "It's okay, honey." They were very close but hadn't spoken in about six months, as Helen lived in another state.

Freaked out, she called Helen's house a couple of times. No answer. Helen lived in a rural area, and so on a hunch, she called the local hospital and asked for her, whereupon she was put through to her room, a nurse answered and asked who she was, and Helen's husband then came on telling my mother she had passed on 10 minutes earlier from aggressive cancer that had come out of nowhere a few months before.

Helen hadn't wanted to worry my mother, so she didn't tell her. No way to fake it, no reason to. Witnessing the whole thing was direct proof for me there was some kind of afterlife I hadn't believed in until that moment. No idea what to think now, I'm not religious, but there is something...

Normally I would just disregard it, but rumors had been spreading all over that a ghost child was playing around on the vacant floors.

#60 Dad Saves the Day

I always kind of entertained the idea of the paranormal, but my first experience really solidified that belief. I live in the rural countryside with lots of wildlife. Anyway, it was late at night, and I was driving down the road a little faster than I should be, when my dad shouts, "STOP!" I slammed on my brakes and this massive elk-sized deer runs in front of the road.

What’s so creepy about that? My dad's been dead for a few years. I'm short and have to sit really close to the steering wheel, so I'm sure I wouldn’t have lived if I hit the deer. I pulled to the side of the road and cried.

#61 Playmate

Walking into the bedroom to see my kid jumping on the bed while she was supposed to be napping. When I asked her what she was doing, she informed me that she was playing with grandpa. After I ripped the house apart thinking that there had been an intruder inside, I sat down and asked her what this "grandpa" character looked like.

My jaw dropped. She described my grandfather, who passed before she was born, to a T. Thinking about it, it made sense because that was such a grandpa thing. She said that she plays with him all the time but only jumps when he holds her so she doesn’t fall and when grandma isn't watching. Also, typical grandpa—we got away with everything when grandma wasn't around.

While creepy to anyone else, I'm incredibly grateful that even though both of my grandparents are gone, they hang around and protect my kids, none of which they ever met in life. I firmly believe they were with me when my twin sons were born more than two months early and protected them when doctors said they wouldn't make it.

#62 Shhh

One time when I was in middle school, I fell asleep on the couch in our living room. Around one in the morning, I woke up and saw a man walk through the wall adjoining our living room to my brother's bedroom. The man noticed me and turned to face me. He had half of his face missing as if he had been dragged along the highway.

He put his finger to his lips as if to tell me not to tell anyone and then turned forward and walked through our glass door out into the yard. Obviously freaked out, I ran into my brother's room to find an empty bed. I run screaming and crying to my parents and they freak out and start calling all my brother's friends' houses trying to find him.

When they finally got in touch with him they found out he had been at a college party drinking about an hour away. My dad went to pick my brother and his best friend up not wanting them to drive home drunk. The next day we got news so disturbing that it made my blood run cold. We found out that the kid who was originally going to drive my brother home passed away after he was ejected from his car during a drunk driving accident.

Scariest Things They've Woken Up To factsShutterstock

#63 Do You See Her?

I have a version of sleep paralysis, so as terrifying as it can be, I’m generally pretty used to waking up to seeing things. I was on a road trip with my friend and we were staying in a hotel off of Route 66. I went to sleep before her and she stayed up to watch television on her phone. We turned the lights off and I started to doze off.

Every so often, I’d wake up to her panning her phone light to the area in between our beds. After a little while, she got up to go to the bathroom. I woke up once or twice to see a dark figure of a woman standing in between our two beds looking at me. Being exhausted from driving and prone to hallucinating when I sleep, I thought nothing of it.

A bit later, I woke up to the sound of a door slamming and my friend crossing the room and climbing into bed… she was laying directly on her side, stiff as a board, staring at me. I yelled, “What the heck, Mary?!” And turned on the light...but there was no one there. My scream brought Mary out of the bathroom though, and I just told her I had a nightmare.

Later that night, I woke up again to see the woman standing in between our beds. But this time, she moved over to the desk in the room, seemingly writing something. I quietly said Mary’s name, but before I could say anything else, Mary cut me off, asking: “Is that you?” We turned on the lights and stared at each other for a minute.

She started to ask me what I’d seen, but I cut her off and told her that we were both too tired to get on the road at three in the morning and we’d already paid for the room. We slept with the lights on in the same bed for the rest of the night. The next morning as we were driving away, we compared notes.

She said she kept flashing her phone light because she kept seeing the shadow of a woman standing between our beds. It freaked her out so much that she went into the bathroom to watch TV with the lights on. She saw the woman walk over to the desk as well. We now both have tattoos commemorating the terrifying road trip from the underworld.

Nobody was there but the three of us, and nobody was living in the house at the time. We looked around quickly, spending no more than three to four minutes before deciding we weren't interested.

When we got to the front door to leave, there was a big rocking chair blocking it on the inside. My husband moved it without saying anything. I said to the broker, "How did that chair get there?" She just shook her head indicating she didn't want to discuss it and we all walked to the car in silence.

#65 More Than Imaginary

When I was very young, I had an “imaginary friend” named Samantha. I vividly remember playing dolls and stuff with her and all that kinda stuff. One day when I was like five or so, I asked her why she would never be at my mom’s. My parents are divorced and have been forever. Sam responded with something along the lines of, “I can’t, your mother will remember me, don’t talk to her about me,” I just said okay and went back to playing with dolls.

Years later, I remembered this (when I was out of my imaginary friend stage) and I talked to my mom about it. She got terrified and made me shut up right then and there. After a while, we finally talked about it. In high school, my mom had a friend who died by suicide, and her name was Samantha. Since that, I’ve always believed in supernatural stuff.

#66 Just Tell Me

My dad wasn’t home and it was just me, my sister, and my mom. This was during the day and the way our living room was arranged you could see into the dining room. The dining room light was off but out of nowhere, it turned on. All three of us were in the living room and no one else was home. We’re like, what the heck? After a few minutes, it turned off.

It happened a few times and my mom commented that it was her deceased brother, who passed as a teen, looking over us. My sister said something like, “Well, tell him to stop that,” and the light immediately turned back off and didn’t turn back on again. There is probably some kind of more reasonable explanation, but it was weird and kinda creepy.

#67 HELP

I used to go to Army Cadets in like 2011-2012, and on the way back there was an abandoned building. I started in winter so it was always dark on the way back (around 9:00 pm) so I didn't notice the most chilling part of the building until it was too late. I went there in July when the sun went down much later in the night. As I looked around, I felt a chill run down my spine.

The word "HELP" was carved into the window. If it was the bottom floor I could brush it off as a prank or something, but it was the top window of a four-story building. The place got knocked down thankfully.

#68 Reads Like a Freddy Krueger Nightmare

Cop here. One night I was on patrol with my partner when we get called to respond to an alarm activation at the elementary school. So we go, secure the building, and call in that the building is all secure. No problem, keep patrolling. About 15-20 minutes go by and we get another alarm activation. We get back out there and check and now there is a maintenance door open that leads into a boiler roomish thing. Nothing in it, we close it, lock it and get out.

Another 20 minutes and another alarm. We respond, all the doors are still locked and we can't get in, maintenance door is locked. Call in the all clear. This time my buddy and I sit on opposite sides of the building and watch to see if someone is coming and yanking the doors real hard to set the alarm off. Half an hour passes and right as we're about to leave, another alarm activates. We give up and call the building custodian.

Building custodian shows up and we start doing a walk through. That's when we see it: One of the maintenance doors is open with the lights on in the room. Now, this room is literally the size of a closet. We walk down there and look in, no one's in it and that door is locked when it closes. We look in there and we find a single footprint of a barefoot made of water (Left foot as I recall) of a small child.

Freaked the living heck out of us because no one reported a missing child and the entire building was clear and still locked up. No one left, no one entered and we checked every inch of that darn place (literally a 3-hour deep sweep including ceiling tiles). To this day, my partner refuses to go into that school. I can't say I blame him.

#69 Having a Big Black Ball

When my sister and I were young, we both had imaginary friends, but we could both sense hers. It was like a black ball of energy. My sister claimed her imaginary friend told her its—her—name. We played with her outside, and my sister talked our mom into setting a place for her at the table a few times.

Eventually, our parents were uncomfortable with how convinced we both were of this imaginary friend and forbade all mention of her. Some years later we learned there had been a small group of Native Americans living in that area who had been wiped out about a hundred years before. The name of the group was that which my sister's imaginary friend had said was hers so long ago.

#70 Trouble Down Under

My kid's Catholic school is over 100 years old. There is a basement under the gym that's used for storage. I was subbing once and, during recess, one of the kickballs rolled down the stairs. A little girl was standing at the top of the stairs yelling "Just throw it up to me." I went over and asked who she was talking to and she replied "That big man at the bottom of the stairs!"

I went down and there was nobody there. There was no other way in and hardly anyone ever even went down there. I asked some of the other kids if they have seen the man before and they said: "Yes, but Sister told us not to talk to him." I asked them to describe this "sister" and they described a nun. There haven't been nuns at the school in 40 years...

#71 Ghost Has Joined the Chat

I've worked in property management for a while and one of the properties I managed was an old abandoned bank/office building. It had two elevators, but only one of them worked. Once, while doing a routine safety inspection, I got on the elevator in the basement and pressed floor 12 (the top floor). The next three minutes made my blood run cold.

The elevator stopped on floor three. The doors opened. A cool breeze blew in. The doors closed. The elevator continued to floor 12. I swear a freaking ghost joined me in the elevator.

#72 Think Twice Before Taunting

I live in Northern Australia and everyone growing up in my town knows of the legend of the poinciana woman. A quick google search will elaborate into the many variations to the story, but the one I grew up to know is that of a woman who was assaulted by Japanese fishermen and who hanged herself from a poinciana tree when she had discovered she was pregnant.

She is said to appear as a beautiful woman to entice men; with long dark hair and dressed in a white gown. She is said to be situated at our army reserve. When I was around twelve, and my younger brother ten, he had been in his room and I was in the lounge room on the computer. He had come barreling out from his room screaming,  "Can you hear that! Can you hear that?!" before dragging me over to the window.

There was a faint feminine moan/hum, we could hear it moving from the window we stood at, to the one across the room and back in a clockwise direction. The wind had picked up with the noise despite how still the night had been. The sound became so loud that we were on the floor covering our ears crying, and when I've brought it up recently my brother agrees it was almost as if the sound had been in our heads. This went on for about ten minutes before abruptly stopping. No wind, nothing.

We found out the next day that our older siblings had been at the army reserve that night before they got home, had climbed the concrete pillars to the locked gun turret, and had been "taunting" the poinciana woman. Before they left, they heard footsteps, but they assumed it was security. That's not what creeps me out most though.

Not long after this happened, I realized that we had a poinciana tree outside of that window.

#73 It was Only a Dream...

My family was staying in this villa where my sister and I had to share a room, and we both woke up suddenly. The window was open, when it hadn't been before. I realized she was awake as well, and told her I'd had a bad dream, and as I started to describe it, she started talking along with me, describing the same dream.

In it, there was this black creature that looked like a bull; only it had shiny, scaly, plastic-looking skin, and was standing in the open window with this weird mechanical device. It somehow fired a projectile at the lamp in the room, which started rocking back and forth. Neither of us wanted to get up and close the window in case the thing was actually out there, so we called for our mum and she closed it and reassured us in typical mum fashion.

For months we would talk about that incident, and we could never figure out how we both managed to have the same exact dream at the same time.

#74 Do Not Adjust Your Set

I was watching Degrassi with two friends at one of their houses. During a commercial break, the screen abruptly cut to static. We had the black boxed, white font subtitles on, and they started saying things like “Help me” and “I’m trapped.” It was back in 2006, so I can’t remember exactly what else was written, but it freaked us out to say the least and we shut the TV off. No one believed us afterward.

#75 A Transient Guest

My sister is 10 years younger than me. When I was in middle school, both my parents worked long hours and swing shifts, so I would take care of her after school on any given day. One of those particular days, my sis was napping in her bedroom, which was on the far end of the house, and I was watching TV in the living room.

I even remember very specifically that I was watching Clarissa Explains It All. The show was on commercial break when the weird thing happened. Aside from the sounds coming from the TV, the house was quiet as could be, when all of a sudden, from the other side of the house I hear a very decisive slam coming from within the house somewhere.

I remember sitting bolt upright and freezing in that position. I don't remember having any way to verify it, but I swear it was my parents' bedroom door that had slammed. Well, a full minute or so goes by before my sister—she couldn't have been a day older than three at the time—saunters into the living room with the sleepiest, dazed look on her face.

At that point, I was so jostled that I couldn't really speak. My sister was the one to break the silence to ask, "Where did she go?" As I regained the wits enough to be able to piece words together again, I asked: "Where did who go?" To which my sis replied, "The lady that was just talking to me." I have no way of really knowing for sure, but I'm certain that at that point I must have gone pale.

I distinctly remember the intermingled feelings of vertigo, nausea, and paranoia. No more than half a minute passed by before my sister shrugged it off and with humor in her voice said, "never mind" and went back to her room as if all was business as usual. I don't remember what eventually broke my paralysis or how long I was in that state, but I eventually got the nerve—after getting the largest kitchen knife I could find, of course—and did a perfunctory sweep of the house.

To this day, the part about the whole thing that sticks with me the most—and still sends shivers down my spine—is how nonchalant my sister shrugged it off. Almost laughed it off, one could say. It just didn't sit right with me. Something about her mannerisms that felt far beyond her years. Like a two-year-old adult.

Of course, through the years I've brought it up and she has always maintained not having any recollection of it whatsoever.

#76 The Monk in My Closet

When I was about 10 years old, I was cleaning my room and had just finished vacuuming. The floor in my room was a thick kind of carpet that left footprints after it had been vacuumed. After finishing cleaning, I left my room and started walking down the stairs. The door to my room and the stairs were next to each other, so while going down the stairs you can see through the balusters into the room.

As I'm walking down the stairs, I see something moving out of the corner of my eye through the balusters. It was a person in a brown monk-like robe, with the hood over their head and one of those rope belts. I saw this person walk through my vacuumed room and into my closet. I panicked and ran downstairs and straight out the front door where I knew my mom was visiting with the neighbor.

They ran upstairs and looked in the closet. No one was there, but there were large footprints that lead into the closet and just stopped there. I'm not a religious person and don't believe in anything supernatural, but I have no explanation for this occurrence.

#77 There’s Evil in Them Thar Woods

In the late 80s I was in my early 20s, and two friends and I went camping in central Florida. Two of us were working for the Park Service at that time, so we were able to camp for free in other parks in the state. Both of us had done a lot of camping before. Me, I grew up camping with my family on every single vacation, all over the state.

For the other friend with us, this was her first camping trip ever. We were camping in the youth area, which was empty that weekend and was quieter and more isolated than the regular campsites. Later in the afternoon on the second day of our trip, we were all sort of spread out in the area of the campsite, being within shouting distance but enjoying a little solitude.

I was collecting firewood. Every now and then, I'd kind of feel like someone was watching me. I'd look around, see and hear nothing, and then shrug it off and go back to what I was doing. Later on around sunset, we had the bonfire started. One of the rangers who lived on-site about a quarter-mile away came over with a truckload of firewood and a six-pack of beer.

We all sat around talking for awhile. Well after dark, we could suddenly hear what was probably a bunch of teenagers fooling around on one of the trails a couple miles away. Since the trails were closed at sunset, the ranger and my coworker drove off to shoo them back to their campsites. My other friend and I were just relaxing around the fire, talking a little, mostly enjoying the night and the peace and quiet.

All of a sudden, I had a cold chill go over me. The hair stood up on the back of my neck, and out of nowhere I was terrified. I tried to ignore it, but it kept building. I didn't say anything to my friend since I didn't want to scare her. Then I glanced over at her just as she glanced at me, and she said, "Do you feel that?!" I said, "Yeah...I think maybe we'd better go to the car."

We both felt like we were in deadly danger, but no idea from what. We started walking at a casual pace, not wanting to appear scared, then halfway to the car we looked at each other again and simultaneously broke into a dead run. We reached the car, jumped in and locked the doors, and turned on the headlights.

I sat there with my pistol, feeling like it was totally inadequate for whatever was out there. We both just sat looking straight ahead—we were afraid to look around. I had the feeling at one point that if I turned my head and looked out the window, I'd see something that would drive me insane. I don't know how long we sat there.

It was probably just a few minutes, but it felt like forever. Then it just...left. We could actually feel it going away. A few minutes after that, the other two came back in the truck. We kind of laughed it off afterward, but I'll tell you, I've never been that scared before or since. I've faced a lot in my life and NOTHING has so completely terrified me like that. I don't know what it was, but I'm still convinced we were in terrible danger.

#78 The Nanny

When my son was a baby, he started crying in his crib at about 3 am. I sat up, dreading having to nurse him back to sleep for the third time that night. All of a sudden, I hear a soft, sweet, woman's voice over the baby monitor say, "Shhh...don't cry...go to sleep..." And my son settled right down back to sleep. In my sleep-deprived state, I was like, "Cool…she's got him," and I went back to sleep myself.

When I woke up that morning, I was like, "Did I just let a ghost nanny take care of my baby?!...Can she come back tonight?!" She did not...but I did constantly see orbs fly around over his crib over the video monitor which were clearly not bugs or dust.

#79 Who Needs Sleep Anyway?

About a year ago I had a terrible nightmare.

It started off me waking up in bed during a thunderstorm. As the room illuminated again and again from the flashes of lightning outside I realized that the bed I was laying in wasn't mine. The head of the bed was against the wall the door was located on, and from my perspective, I couldn't tell if it was open or closed.

That is until I saw the face. At first, just the nose and jaw broke past the door frame, but then an entire face slowly passed through the doorway. I tried to yell, "Who the heck are you, where am I?" but it felt like I had lost my voice. No matter how hard I tried to scream, nothing came out and this person continued to enter the room, looking dead ahead, away from me.

Then, just as the person was completely into the room, their head snapped towards me, and it locked eyes with mine. I tried to get out of the bed but felt completely paralyzed. The person's started making their way to me, but with every step, their body contorts in ways that would break a normal person's bones. Their neck snapped so the back of their head touched their back, their jaw layer flat on their chest, their arms had broken at the shoulders and migrated to their back like wings.

Just terrifying stuff. And just before they reached me, I woke up. The next day I told my mom about it and went into great deal about the room. Turns out it was almost an exact copy of my room when I was a baby. We moved out of that house when I was super young, like I have no idea what the insides to any room look like. Just kinda weird I guess.

#80 The Real Annabelle

My sister had this creepy porcelain doll with a black tear on its face in our room. It was a gift from an old aunt, and our mom put it away on the top shelf of a bookcase where neither of us could reach it. We constantly told each other ghost stories about how the doll was haunted, was hiding knives, and would kill us in our sleep one day.

Kind of weird, I know but we laughed about how freaky it was. One morning we woke up and my sister was covered in blood. We pulled off the blankets and she had gashes all over her legs and big sharp pieces of the doll all over the bed. We never figured out how it got off the bookshelf and into the bed, let alone how it smashed into pieces and cut her.

#81 Time to Face the Music

We were gathered at the dinner table with some friends and I had been offered a glass of wine, despite not having been 21 yet at the time. I took it and casually turned to look out the window while drinking it. As soon as I looked out, I suddenly felt a weird sensation as if someone was staring back at me. I then spotted a man with no face standing on the sidewalk outside, way off in the distance. He was tall and very thin, but he had no face.

There was just a blur where his face should’ve been. I obviously freaked out and let out a scream. When all the adults turned to me, I stammered trying to explain what I had just seen. Of course, nobody believed me. They all said I was probably drunk off of the small sips of wine I had taken, but I know what I saw. I still get this acute sense of dread whenever I think about it.

#83 O’ Brothers Where Art Thou?

We were in the process of moving from an apartment over a business, and I told the landlord about an experience I had one night. I got up to go to the bathroom, and in the hallway, I saw three dark shadows moving along the wall. They were man-shaped, and it looked as if you could reach through them into an infinite void.

I was terrified, and started yelling, and my father came out of his bedroom to see what was the matter and told me that I was dreaming it. I know to this day I wasn't, it was very distinct, and I was standing in the hallway. So, as I tell the guy I am glad to leave the place, no offense, he tells me sincerely that years ago the shop was a bakery, and there was a fire that burned the place, and it was rented by three brothers who perished.

He had the most bizarre look on his face trying to see if I was pranking him. Totally weirds me out to this day.

#84 A Familiar Friend

My grandmother died on my ninth birthday. She was pretty sick, skin cancer. She went into the hospital during Hurricane Bob and stayed there until she passed. I remember things got pretty bad that New Year’s so my parents went to the hospital and my aunt was watching us. I remember laying in bed, praying (and I'm not religious at all) that she'd be okay and, if she wouldn't be okay, that she'd at least be happy in heaven.

I was also extremely sad that she was going to miss my birthday (New Year's Day...also, kind of selfish of me as a nine-year-old). At around 11:30 pm that night, I woke up to someone calling my name out in the hallway. When I went to look, nobody was there. I checked all the bedrooms, the kitchen, etc. Everyone was asleep so there was no way my aunt or brother were calling my name.

I figured I just heard it in my dreams and went back to bed. As I was trying to fall back asleep, I distinctly (like, clear as day) remember hearing my grandmother. I couldn't see her, but I could certainly feel her and hear her. I can't say for certain I wasn't dreaming, but if I was, this was the most lucid dream I've ever had. She said to me: "I held on for as long as I could so I wouldn't miss your birthday. My present will be a little late (sarcastic laugh). It will be here next year. Happy Birthday!"

Then silence. The next year, my aunt gave me a cat for my birthday. The cat (Felix) and I instantly bonded (much like my grandmother and I). He followed me literally everywhere, never leaving my side. He would walk on a leash with me, ride in the car with me, etc. The day I bought my first house is the day he abruptly passed away from cancer. He lived nearly 19 years.

As weird as it sounds, I'm convinced my grandmother had planned to come back to me as a cat and stuck with me until she felt she was no longer needed.

#85 When the People Are Away, the Cats Will Play

I live in a condo complex where a lot of people, including myself, have cats. I know that my cat sometimes mingles with the other ones outside, and very often they fight. One day, I was walking back home from school in the afternoon. I was just about to walk inside my house, when I heard a familiar "meow" sound off in the distance. It sounded like my cat.

I followed the sound until I reached the porch of a vacant condo. I kid you not, I saw about a dozen cats having a meeting. An actual human-like meeting. They were all sitting in a perfect circle, including my own cat. They were each taking turns meowing and were all acting very polite and cordial to one another. There was no hissing, licking, or fighting whatsoever. As you might imagine, few people believe me when I try and inform them that I once saw the neighborhood cats having a meeting...

#87 Black Sheep

There I was, a seven-year-old kid in rural Utah. I was staying the night at my grandparents' house on Main Street. I didn't want to sleep, so around midnight, I went down into the basement. I took my Matchbox cars and played with my glowing "Better Blocks." I had this little metropolis going on when my uncle came down to play with me.

Should I mention that my great uncle died when I was two? Well, he did. Anyway, my great uncle and I played for a good hour. I remember it like it was just yesterday. He drove Lincoln, because that was his favorite car. Anyway, it got late, and he had to leave so he wouldn't miss his train. He left, and I went to sleep.

The next morning, I asked when my uncle was coming back to play again. My grandparents were slightly offended that I bought it up. They hadn't seen him since before I was born and wanted nothing to do with him. He was the black sheep of the family. I said him and I played cars, and showed them the car that he drove in our city.

They were uncomfortable with this and chalked it up to my imagination. I had never met my uncle. Again, he died when I was two. Over the years since then, I have learned that he drove both a train (for Union Pacific) and a Lincoln MKVII. As I said, I don't believe in ghosts, but I don't know how seven-year-old me knew things about an estranged relative who died when I was two and was never spoken of due to certain family issues.

To this day I don't know what happened that night, but I remember playing with some guy who said he was my "uncle" like it was yesterday. He was super nice, and at the end of the game simply left out the back door.

#88 The Hitchhiker’s Guide to a New City

So, I had a football coach back in high school who was also one of my teachers for a semester. He told us one story that freaked us all out pretty bad. He had a coaching job at a small college in Montana when he was a lot younger and newly married. He said that after practice one evening, he was making his long commute home, and the route ran alongside fields and fields of hay, grain, whatever. Since it was late summer/early fall, it wasn't even approaching dark yet. His car was an old beat-up truck with just a bench seat.

Anyway, he's driving along when he sees a hitchhiker on the shoulder. This being back in the day and in small-town Montana, my teacher pulled over to let the guy in without a second thought. The man was described as wearing a really old, outdated style of suit. Not quite a zoot suit, but styled in a similar, baggy way. He also had a big, stylish hat.

This guy looked like he was out of the 40s, and "sort of like a pimp." My teacher thought it was weird that he was so overdressed, it being super hot out. But maybe that was the only clothing he had. So the guy gets in next to my teacher without a word. Teacher asks him where he needs to go, and the guy just points forward. Teacher drives on.

Later, my teacher tried talking to the guy, just trying to make simple conversation, but the guy wouldn't speak or even acknowledge him. He just pulled his hat down like he was sleeping. Out of nowhere, the guy just tips up his hat, looks out the window, and says, "Stop the car. Now." My teacher pulls over and lets him out, not wanting to offend a possibly crazy man.

The guy stands on the side of the road for a second, and then at a dead sprint, just runs off into the field beside the road, until my teacher couldn't see him anymore (granted the crop was fairly tall). He waits there for a while, thinking maybe the guy had the runs or something and didn't want to defecate next to the road. After a long enough wait, my teacher gets back in the truck and starts to accelerate back onto the road.

The thing about really old trucks is that they don't accelerate very fast. As my teacher got back on to the road, he looked in his rearview mirror to check for a safe merge. But there wasn't a car in sight. What there was, was the hitchhiker, on all fours like an animal, running (crawling?) after the truck at an inhuman speed. Meanwhile, my teacher is beginning to fish-tail as he attempts to go faster. The whole time his eyes glued remain on the mirror, watching the man chase after his car.

Eventually, he was able to get up to speed and lost sight of the guy in his mirror. When he was able to stop at a gas station to use a pay phone, he called his wife at home to tell her the story, and to lock up the house. She thinks he's just messing with her, and he had been talking to her coworker about the hitchhiker.

When he asks why she would think that, apparently at her office in the town she worked in, one of her coworkers told her a story of the exact same thing happening to them. And it is a well-known urban legend in that town. She thought it was just folks playing with the new girl at work, who had to drive home alone at night.

Anyways, my teacher assured her that he was not lying, and she evidently believes him and can vouch for her side of the story, because she showed up to one of our fundraisers and I asked her about it. So yeah, now I just avoid lonely roads in Montana.

#90 Fire Burning on the Dog Track Floor

I've been through a supposedly haunted region plenty of times with different groups of friends, and each time we've encountered strange (but not inexplicable) things. Once, a buddy and I were walking down a street that leads into the haunted place and we could hear something that sounded like it was aggressively eating just inside the woods. We returned to our vehicle to grab our phones to record it, and when we returned, it stopped.

Another time we had a larger group, and we went into the entrance near a dog track. It was dark, and we had maybe three flashlights. We walked for what seemed about 15 minutes, and then we could see a light up ahead. As we approached it, it looked like a paper lantern lit. It was pretty windy, but the fire kept burning. We quickly turned around.

#92 Smile and Say Cheese!

Back in 2014, I was sleeping over at my cousin’s house for New Year’s eve. It was just my three cousins, my brother, and myself. We all decided to sleep in the same bedroom for the night, as we had just become old enough to stay at home on our own and our parents were staying out all night, so we were a little nervous. My point here is that we were all 100% certain that we were the only people in the house that night, and we all slept in the same place together.

I woke up the next morning and was getting in the car to leave, when I just happened to take a look at the camera roll on my phone from the previous night. To my absolute horror, I discovered that there were five photos of all of us sleeping. Every single person who was there was in the photos, fast asleep, so there was no way that any of us could have taken them ourselves. My aunt showed the photos to the landlord shortly after, and he had no explanation. To this day, nobody has any idea who took them—or how. My friends have even accused me of making the whole thing up.

#94 I Can See It in Your Eyes

My boyfriend’s younger brother and I were taking a bike ride down the street to the shops late one afternoon. As we get onto the main road, we notice a dude across the street heading in the opposite direction. He is walking with a limp, his head is bowed, and he’s got a plastic bag in his hand. We're only a few metres away from him when he crosses the street onto our side.

As the bro rides past him, this stranger lifts his head up and smiles in his direction as they pass each other. I'm a little while behind, so I don't pay too much attention to this—that is, until the bro stops, turns around, and gives me a funny look, just as this guy is passing him by. I still don't think too much of it at this point, assuming that he had just stopped to let me catch up.

As soon as I myself passed the stranger and made eye contact with him, I realized that this was not the case. When the stranger looked over and nodded at me, I saw nothing in his eyes. When I say nothing, I mean like black pits where his eyes should have been, or just an eyeball that looked entirely black. I don’t know how else to describe it.

When I finally catch up to the bro, we stop around the corner and he says to me "Did you see that???" "You mean his eyes?!" I asked. "Yeah, it looked like they weren't even there!" he replied. We then kind of sat there for a while processing what we had both just seen. Had the bro not related the same feeling and experience to me as I had felt when the stranger looked at me, I doubt I would have ever thought anything of it.

I probably would have just assumed it was the light angles playing tricks on me or some such thing. It was a sunny afternoon, so glare certainly could have played a part. He could've been wearing contacts, I don't know. But none of those explanations feel like they fit. We got home later on and told everybody what had happened, but no one believed us. They still don't to this day.

Strangest Things That No One Believes They’ve Really Experienced FactsShutterstock

#95 Like Something Out of a Movie

My aunt died in the hospital several years ago. She was clinically dead for a few minutes.

In that time she says she floated above the operating table and saw them trying to revive her. She says she felt a pull on her and flew out through the very top of the room. She remembered very clearly floating above the light fixture on the ceiling and then there being darkness.

Suddenly she found herself floating above the ground several inches just above a field of dirt. In front of her was a very large chasm, deep, very dark, she couldn't see the bottom of it from where she was. On the other side of the chasm was a beautiful field. Green grass, flowers, trees and sunlight. On her side of the chasm it was overcast and very little light, no vegetation, just brown dirt.

She felt the same force that pulled her out through the ceiling of the hospital start pulling her across the chasm. As she started floating over the chasm these hands reached out of the blackness and started pulling at her, almost like ripping the flesh from her legs and feet. She says it was the worst feeling of pain and cold she had ever experienced and it horrified her.

After what seemed like forever she reached the other side of the chasm and the hands went away. The feeling of pain and terror was replaced with a feeling of happiness and contentment and warmth. Several family members that had been dead for some time were there and they seemed to be beckoning her over. She was going to the field when she heard the doctor say something. It sounded like it echoed very loudly from the other side of the chasm.

Suddenly that force pulled her across the chasm again only this time much faster than she had been pulled over the first time. Again the hands came and again the cold. The hands ripped at her and she felt the pain she had felt before. Finally she came to the dirt side of the chasm again. Then blackness. Then she was on the ceiling of her room in the hospital again and she saw her body spasm violently and her arm smacked the doctor's arm, breaking his watch. Her spirit was pulled back into her body again and she heard him say something like "She's back" and then blackness again.

Several hours later she woke up and she was PISSED OFF, at first. Then she realized she was alive and she thanked the doctor and apologized for breaking his watch. He was surprised because when she did that she was technically dead. I don't know what she saw but she was very descriptive of what she thinks she saw. This was very long ago and she's now on the other side of that chasm due to lung cancer

#96 Mommy's Little Pre-Cog

When my sister was little, she asked my then-pregnant aunt to pick her up. My mom said, "She can't pick you up honey, she has a baby in her tummy." My sister looked at her and uttered a truly disturbing reply. She yelled, “That baby is dead!” My mom started freaking out, but everyone else laughed it off. A few days later, my aunt went for a routine checkup, only to get some chilling news—my sister had been right.
