5 Body Language Cues To Look Out For During A Date

Dating would be a whole lot easier if we could just read minds. Perhaps the most stressful part about going on a date is not knowing what the other person is thinking. Did you make a good first impression? Did you dress well enough? Does he or she think you're attractive? Technically, you could just ask your date for their opinion on you straight away, but let's be real—most people don't.

The closest thing to mind-reading we have is interpreting body language. There's a lot you can learn from a person's mannerisms and reactions. The hardest part about it is interpreting those behaviors correctly. Luckily for you, we've compiled five of the most common body language cues and what they mean. The next time you go on a date, look out for these cues to get a better idea of what your date is thinking.

#1 Mirror game

A good way to tell if you and your date are vibing on the same wavelength is if you are both using similar gestures. When you and your date start to mirror each other's movements, that's an indication that you are both paying attention to the details. By nature, humans have a tendency to subconsciously mimic the actions of people they like. Such phenomenon gives merit to the saying, "The more time you spend with someone, the more like them you become."

#2 Close and closer

If your date leans in closer to you when you say something positive, that could be a sign that your date is into you, according to body language expert Patti Wood. This makes sense—there have been several studies that show physical closeness plays a vital role in the development of romance and feelings. The simple act of leaning in is an indication that the other person is interested in you and what you have to say. It's a way to show that they are fully engaged with you.

#3 The eyes are a window

You can learn a lot about someone by looking into their eyes. Eye-to-eye communication is key on any date, but there's more to it than just maintaining eye contact. A closer look at a person's pupils can give you information about how they are feeling. When it comes to attraction, pupil dilation is a very useful tell. Dilated pupils are an unconscious reaction that occurs when the brain is working hard to interpret new information. In other words, your date may be interested in getting to know you better.

#4 Touching, but in a non-creepy way

As previously mentioned, physical closeness is an important part of developing a good connection with someone. Humans will typically reach for the things they like. If your date reaches towards you to touch you in a way that doesn't make you feel uncomfortable, that's a pretty telling sign that they are interested in you. Whether they gently move your hair out of your face or brush off a loose eyelash from your cheek, those small, non-creepy touches can tell you a lot about what they are thinking.

#5 Conspicuous lip glances

There's just something so intimate about looking at somebody's lips. If your date constantly switches his or her gaze between your eyes and your lips, it could mean that they're thinking about kissing you. This gesture, combined with the ones mentioned above, is an incredibly useful way to gauge whether or not you and your date are genuinely vibing with one another.
