How To Keep A Long-Distance Relationship Alive

Long-distance relationships can be rough on everyone. When all the other couples in your life are busy hanging out together and enjoying each other’s company, you rarely see your partner. While it’s easy to get bogged down by the distance, it doesn’t need to drive a wedge between you guys. Here are some helpful ways to keep the flame burning in your relationship.

Trust Each Other

First of all, your relationship will quickly fizzle if you don’t trust your long-distance partner. Of course, trust is a major component of any relationship, but you’ll need to pay a little more attention to it when your significant other isn’t around all the time.

There are some good ways to ensure you trust your partner. It takes time to build it thoroughly, but you can do little things throughout the relationship to boost their faith in you. First, make sure you’re open to each other. Now, you don’t need to speak at all times during the day (you’re not Jim and Pam), but open communication is key. Don’t be afraid to share your fears and worries with the one you trust most.

Have Your Own Life

Again, like all relationships, you need to have alone time. It’s not necessary for you to check in on your partner every second of the day. You’re individuals with your own lives and that’s the way it should be! Schedule time with your friends, make time for family and don’t preoccupy your time with your significant other.

Do Things Together

Though you’re apart, that doesn’t mean you need to be apart. In this day and age, technology is our best friend. So, tune into a show together, take online quizzes or play a game online. Another great way to stay connected is to call your partner while you’re out for a stroll. Give your partner a shout and take them on a journey to your favorite trail or around your neighborhood.

A long-distance relationship shouldn’t rely solely on text messages. Make the time for your partner with more interactive activities. Not only will this help you connect, but it will also show your significant other that you care about them. Of course, you should also schedule some time to see each other in-person. You don’t need to break the bank or ruin your schedule, but you should definitely make the time for that special someone.

Make a Plan

Okay, so you guys see each other every other month and talk every day. You both know that’s probably not enough for you. Have a discussion with your partner about when you want to move in together or at least live in the same city. Even if you don’t move in together right away, it’s important to have a rough estimate of when you’ll see each other for good.

Just like people have plans for their careers, you guys should have a plan for your relationship. Take a look at your financial situation, what you want in life, and how your partner fits into that plan. It doesn’t need to happen right away, but if you’re in it for the long haul, your partner will be excited to have this discussion.

Long-distance relationships are hard, there’s no doubt about that. But, so long as you’re honest with each other and have faith in each other, things will get easier. Make time for one another in creative ways and make sure you schedule trips to see each other. Depending on how long you’ve been together, it may also be time to generate a plan for your life and relationship.
