The Successful Investing Career Of Ryan Reynolds

Lucrative Off-Screen Successes

Ryan Reynolds is one of the most well-paid movie stars in Hollywood, but the Canadian-born actor's investment decisions have been even more lucrative. Let’s look at some of Reynolds’ many successful investments and business ventures. What can we learn from him about successful investment strategies?

A Successful Launch

Reynolds launched his own production company Maximum Effort in 2018 that has co-produced the films Deadpool 2 (2018), Free Guy (2021), The Adam Project (2022), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Maximum Effort has also produced several commercials for Reynolds’ other brands, including Aviation Gin and Mint Mobile.

Aviation Gin

Reynolds bought the Aviation Gin brand from Davos Brands, LLC in 2018 and sold it to distiller Diageo two years later for $610 million. Though the value of Reynolds’ original stake was never disclosed, the sale brought in a boatload of money for the star, whose own association with the brand brought it renewed visibility.

Mint Mobile

Reynolds acquired a 25% share in the Mint Mobile telecom company. The company was bought by the giant wireless carrier T-Mobile US in 2024 for $1.3 billion. The transaction personally brought Reynolds $300 million. Reynolds currently remains in a creative consulting role with the company after having taking an active hand in the company’s advertising campaigns over the years.

Nuvei

Reynolds acquired an unknown percentage in the payment-processing company Nuvei in 2023. The company has experienced 15-20% revenue growth. Nuvei was bought by a private equity group in 2024 for $6.3 billion.

Wrexham AFC

Reynolds bought the Welsh football club Wrexham in a partnership along with fellow actor Rob McElhenny in 2020. Reynolds’ production company produced the documentary Welcome to Wrexham (2022–) depicting the club's activities. The show has won eight PrimeTime Emmy Awards.

Other Investments

Other successful companies that Reynolds has backed include WealthSimple, 1Password, and the Alpine Formula One Team. At a current net worth of $150 million and a diversified array of successful holdings, Reynolds is one of the wealthiest people in the country. What does Reynolds say about his personal investing philosophy?

The Common Denominator

Reynolds has said in interviews that he looks for companies with a strong brand foundation that had a great story to tell. He himself has played an active role in telling that story through his acting background and advertising productions. He has also said that financially backing a company gives him an emotional stake in the company’s success instead of doing paid product endorsements. Brands losing customers through poor decision-making are a non-starter for the buiness-savvy movie star.

Knowing The Company

While most won’t be able to apply Reynolds’ level of support to the companies they invest in, we can still learn something from his approach. Reynolds makes a point of taking the time to get to know the company and its operations as well as possible. This is knowledge that any investor can apply. The more you understand a business or industry and how it works, the more chance you have of a successful investment and future financial freedom.

Inheritance disputes can turn old resentments into a very current financial problem. One of the most common flashpoints is when one child received years of help during a parent’s lifetime and another did not. If your parents now want you to split an inheritance evenly with your brother anyway, the short answer is that you usually do not have to unless a legal document requires it.
