The Best Road Trip SUVs

If you're thinking about taking to the open road, a reliable SUV is your best friend. The only problem is there are so many choices. To make that choice a little easier, here are the best road trip SUVs, ranked.

5. Subaru Outback

The Outback is Subaru's hottest commodity, and it's not hard to see why. It rides about 9 inches off the ground, but it's still compact enough that its roof rails are still accessible. The interior is also spacious. It seats 5 with plenty of room for camping gear and bags.

4. Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot os a dream if you're planning to take the kids along for the road trip. You have the option to purchase it with separate second row seats, which every parent knows can be a life saver. It also has an optional second row entertainment system to keep the kiddies distracted on long journeys.

3. Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride puts a premium on space. It can seat up to 8, or you can fold down the back two rows and voila -- storage city. it also gets excellent mileage for such a rough-and-tumble looking SUV, and the interior is pretty swanky for the price.

2. Jeep Grand Cherokee

If you're going on a real off-roading, alligator-wrestling, back country adventure, accept no substitutes. There are so many ways you can customize the track and engine as well, meaning you can build the perfect car for whatever off-road adventures suit you best. And, of course, Jeeps are super driveable on-road as well!

1. Ford Expedition

In terms of luxury, the Ford Expedition is a class leader. But it also gives the Jeep a run for its money in terms of toughness. The Expedition is well suited for off-roading, while also providing a smooth and comfortable ride. Best of all, you can upgrade to the Expedition Max to get even more storage space.
