Ridiculously Expensive Things People Really Bought—Yes, Seriously

Maybe Money Does Grow On Trees...

Why else would anyone spend this kind of money on these items? Some are just ridiculously expensive while others are shockingly overpriced for what they are. So, if you thought spending $100 on a T-Shirt was crazy—that looks budget-friendly when compared with the amounts of money spent on these things...

Gucci Swimsuit ($490)

While spending almost $500 on a swimsuit just because it has that iconic Gucci logo on it is nuts—that isn't the only reason this swimsuit made our list. This Gucci swimsuit made our list because not only does it cost $490—but you can't actually swim in it. The fabric it's made of is not waterproof and also shouldn't come in contact with chlorine.

Can it still be called a "swimsuit" if you can't swim in it?

"I Am Rich" App ($999.99)

Back in 2008, German software developer Armin Heinrich—after seeing people complain about apps costing more than 99 cents—created the I Am Rich app as a joke. The app did nothing but display the text: "I am rich/I deserv [sic] it/I am good,/healthy & successful", and it cost $999.99.

Eight people bought the app before Apple pulled it from the store the next day.

Ice ($325)

This isn't just any ice, though—this is luxury ice "meticulously crafted to deliver the finest complement to top shelf spirits". You get a 40 piece set of luxurious ice cubes or spheres for that $325.

Gold Fidget Spinner ($16,000)

Fidget spinners are supposed to help calm people down and reduce anxiety. To be honest—if we just spent $16,000 on a fidget spinner, our biggest source of anxiety would be the fact that we just spent $16,000 on a fidget spinner.

Guinea Pig Armor ($24,300)

Yes, we're literally talking about armor for a guinea pig. Some of you may remember back in 2013 when someone posted a guinea pig wearing armor on eBay—selling the armor (not the pig). Well, for those that don't remember this particularly viral moment in time.

Britney Spears' Hair ($1,000,000+)

Remember back when Britney Spears acted out against her conservatorship by shaving her head? Well, the owner of the beauty shop where she shaved off her locks was allowed to keep the hair. The bidding started at $1 million.

“The Golden Boy” Hamburger ($6,000)

For many of us, hamburgers are the greatest comfort food there is. But “The Golden Boy” burger At De Daltons diner in Voorthuizen, Netherlands will not comfort anyone given the hit your wallet takes when you order it. So, what do you get for your $6,000?

The patty is made from ground A5 Japanese Wagyu beef and chuck short ribs.

This is topped with white truffles, Paleta Iberico Bellota ham, onion rings (with Dom Perignon in the batter of course), Beluga caviar, and king crab. As for the bread, you got two halves of a saffron gold-leaf bun (there's some Dom in that as well). Next come the condiments—and we're talking barbecue sauce made with Kopi Luwak coffee and Macallan single malt whiskey.

Hot Dog ($2,300)

We talked about hamburgers, so it seems only fair that we give crazy-overpriced hot dogs their due.

Not sure if it's still available, but back

in the early 2010s, New York City rooftop lounge 230 FIFTH introduced a $2,300 hot dog made with marbled Wagyu beef (dry-aged for 60 days and enriched with black truffle). The hot dog sits in a toasted brioche bun, brushed with white truffle butter. Then they add the organic, saffron-infused W Ketchup and mustard imported from France.

Next come the caramelized onions (cooked in Dom Perignon Champagne) and 100-year-old balsamic vinegar, along with homemade sauerkraut, fine caviar, and relish made from $10 pickles.

And don't forget the shimmering gold leaf.

Kale Miles Belt ($18,000)

Created back in the aughts by mens accessory designer Kale Miles, this belt isn't gold or encrusted with diamonds. There isn't even anything that fancy about the belt itself. The ultra price point is all due to the buckle—made of eight ounces of platinum.

Gold T-Shirt ($240,000)

We mentioned a $100 T-Shirt in the intro—well, you could buy 2,400 of those shirts for what one Indian man paid for a solid gold shirt back in 2013. Crafted by 15 people over 16 days, the thing was made of 14,000 pieces of 22-carat gold and weighed 7.3 pounds, and—at least to us—sounds completely useless.

But that's not the only gold item people have spent stupid money on.

Gold Toilets ($750,000)

There are lots of things people (and tabloids) will remember about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's relationship—and one of them (or shall we say four of them) were the four gold-plated toilets they bought for their Bel Air mansion.

Hippopotamus Sofa ($95,000)

The good thing is this sofa isn't actually made from a real Hippo, so you won't have any animal rights activists throwing red paint on it. But what is it?

It's a "sofa handcrafted to create a life-size majestic hippopotamus. The sofa requires over 400 hours to make due to the intricate design and the artist's painstaking attention to detail, including the barrel-shaped body formed by a steel frame, massive snout, and short legs.

The sofa seat and backrest are formed into one side of the hippopotamus, leaving the other side to display the full, imposing form of the daunting animal. The sofa seat and backrest are made from supple, tufted full-grain leather while the rest of the hippopotamus is covered in pebbled leather-like polyurethane, simulating the texture and look of the hippopotamus' "hairless skin".

Diamond Crystal Dog Bathtub ($12,000)

Hey, if you're going to be sitting on a $95,000 Hippo sofa, shouldn't your dog be bathing in a $12,000 Diamond Swarovski Crystal bathtub?

Well, the folks over at the Posh Puppy Boutique sure thought so when they created this ridiculous thing.

"Each dog bathtub is a work of art, and every single crystal is hand applied. The Diamond Bathtub is the culmination of 3 years worth of hand created artistry. Each rose pink crystal was affixed by hand to the side of the nineteenth century-style claw foot bathtub. The entire process took countless hours and includes 46,928 imported crystals".

Crystal Ergorapido Vacuum Cleaner ($18,000)

And if your dog's bathtub is diamond encrusted then, of course, your vacuum cleaner should be as well.

..right? In 2009, the Electrolux company unveiled their one-off

vacuum decorated with 3,730 Swarovski crystals (although they did make sure to mention at the time that others could be made to order).

Golden Opulence Sundae ($1000)

Serendipity 3 in New York City is famous for being featured in the romantic comedy Serendipity and the fact that Selena Gomez has an ownership stake in the restaurant. But it might be most famous for being the home of the Guinness World Records' most expensive dessert.

The Golden Opulence Sundae is made with Tahitian vanilla ice cream, 23-karat gold, exotic fruits, chocolate, caviar, and more. And is served in a Baccarat Harcourt Crystal goblet.

As expensive as that opulent sundae is, you could get 25 of them for the price of just one of Serendipity 3's Frrrozen Haute Chocolate. An elevated take on the restaurant's beloved Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, the "Haute" version is made with a blend of 28 rare cocoas, edible gold, and a truffle—and is served in a Baccarat crystal goblet, with a gold spoon encrusted with diamonds.

A Window ($3 Million)

Okay, to be fair, this wasn't just any window.

It was

the depository window from which Lee Harvey Oswald aimed and took the fatal shot at President John F Kennedy back in 1963. We wonder how much a piece of the Grassy Knoll would go for?

Diamond Flash Drive ($5,650)

We don't know about you, but the only things we've lost more of over the years than pairs of sunglasses, are flash drives. So, paying over $5,000 for one with diamonds on it sounds utterly pointless. Also, the thing only had a 16 GB capacity.

Prada Paperclip ($185)

You could get a box of 1,000 regular paper clips for about $4—or you could get one for $185. Now, to be fair, those 1,000 paper clips aren't made of 925 silver and don't have "PRADA" engraved on them. The Prada (what they call "Money Clip") is also 2.5 inches in height.

Dolce & Gabbana Toaster ($850)

Okay, we'll admit that the S.M.E.G collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana did produce a beautiful toaster. However, unless when you put bread in it comes out as pieces of haute couture fashion—then $850 is ridiculous. Spoiler: the bread just comes out as toast.

But wait...there's more.

"The Christopher jump rope adds a touch of luxury to daily workouts. Distinguished House touches include Epi leather and Monogram canvas that cover the front and back of the handles, which are accented by gleaming hardware. This sporty item features an innovative design that allows for the length of the rope to be adjusted".

Do you really need your jump rope to be adjustable?

Diamond-Encrusted Football (Soccer Ball) ($250,000)

Whatever you call the sport, football or soccer, spending a quarter of a million dollars on a diamond-encrusted ball seems ridiculous. Even if you are one of the best strikers of all time—as Karim Benzema most-definitely is.

Benzema had this 1,250-carat soccer ball created with 72,000 diamonds and it set him back a small fortune. Thankfully for him—he gets paid a big fortune to play football (soccer).

Dinosaur Skull ($276,000)

There are a few very interesting things about this particular dinosaur skull. The first one being that the Tyrannosaurus Bataar skull was bought in 2007 by actor Nicolas Cage—who actually outbid actor Leonardo DiCaprio to get it.

However, it was later discovered that the skull had been stolen from Mongolia, after which Cage—who had no idea the skull was stolen—returned it to its rightful home.
