COVID Famine: Hunger Could Reach "Biblical Proportions"

We all know the dangers of the COVID-19 virus that has spread around the world. But a more insidious threat is waiting in the wings. The World Food Program warns that poor countries are now facing a 'COVID famine.' It could claim millions of lives by the end of 2020 unless richer countries take immediate action.

Last week, World Food Program (WFP) chief David Beasley warned the UN Security Council that we're on the brink of "multiple famines of biblical proportions.”

Beasley noted that there are already 821 million food insecure people in the world. He cautioned that an additional 130 million might find themselves at risk of starvation before the year is out.

“In a worst-case scenario, we could be looking at famine in about three dozen countries,” Beasley said.

Oil-dependent countries most at risk

The list of countries at risk of famine remains sadly predictable. Yemen, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Congo, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Haiti.

However, the COVID famine will put extra pressure on poor countries dependent on oil exports. In Nigeria, for example, 90% of the economy is dependent on energy exports. With plummeting oil prices, millions more people could be pushed to the brink of starvation.

In response, Beasley has been reaching out to world leaders. The WFP's biggest funders are wealthy nations like the United States, Germany, the UK, and Japan.

"If we have money and access we can avert famine and we can truly avert catastrophic humanitarian death from starvation," Beasley told the Associated Press. "But if we lose our funding, or we lose supply chain, there’s going to be disaster."

That's a real risk, as COVID fears have closed borders and ports as well as farms, roads, and everything in between.

Worried woman holding papers

I covered my parents’ rent for six months. They used the extra money to buy a timeshare. This is the last straw, how do I confront them?

There's a special kind of hurt that comes with realizing someone you love has misused your generosity, and that pain intensifies when it involves your own parents. Helping family members during tough times usually stems from genuine care and a desire to support them through what seems like a real crisis. But when the money meant for essential bills ends up funding luxury purchases that make no financial sense, it creates an emotional whirlwind of anger, disappointment, and complete confusion about what to do next. The whole situation gets messier because you can't just walk away as you might with a friend or colleague—these are the people who raised you, which brings a whole different level of complexity to the table.

American $2 bills are still legal tender, but if yours has the right serial number, it's worth thousands of dollars instead of two.

The $2 bill has always been weird. Nobody uses them. Banks barely stock them. Yet certain ones command jaw-dropping prices among collectors. Serial number patterns can make all the difference.

Woman concerned about job scam

I applied for a remote job and got hired quickly, but now they want my banking info “for payroll setup.” How do I tell if it’s a fake job scam?

You apply for a remote job and you’re hired almost immediately. It feels like a win—until they ask for your banking information to “set up payroll”. That’s when the excitement shifts into suspicion. Is this normal onboarding, or are you about to hand your financial information to a scammer?

Branches from our tree damaged our neighbor’s roof in a storm. She billed us for the repairs but our insurance won’t cover it. Do we have to pay?

Property Tax - Fb

I'm a new homeowner and I don't understand property taxes. My friend says they're "100% deductible" but my dad says that's nonsense. Who's right?

Paying property taxes feels separate from doing taxes. It isn’t. The connection shows up later, buried in forms and choices that affect what you owe or keep at the end of the filing process.
